‘We Got Along Very Quickly’: Sebastian Stan Opens Up About Experience Of Working On A Different Man Alongside Adam Pearson

As a dedicated follower of the captivating world of cinema, I must say that Sebastian Stan‘s performance in A Different Man has left me utterly spellbound. His portrayal of Edward, a complex character grappling with the unique challenges of neurofibromatosis, is nothing short of extraordinary.

Sebastian Stan is garnering appreciation for his portrayal in the A24 film titled “A Different Man.” Lately, he’s shared insights about embodying a character with neurofibromatosis on screen, alongside British actor Adam Pearson, who shares this rare genetic condition.

Stan shared in an interview with PEOPLE that Pearson’s real-life experiences played a crucial role in shaping the character of Edward, a budding actor who undergoes facial reconstructive surgery and develops an obsession with Pearson’s character, Oswald. Both characters share neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

Stan explained, “I collected various parts from diverse sources, and Adam’s insights he shared with me were extremely beneficial for this purpose.

Stan mentioned Pearson, a person who was identified with a neurogenetic disorder at the age of 5, which results in numerous thick and painful growths covering his skin.

Stan mentioned that working with Adam was incredibly seamless, and he developed a strong rapport with him almost immediately. Regarding filmmaker Aaron Schimberg, Stan emphasized that their relationship was built upon trust and ensuring they shared the same vision throughout the project.

Previously, Pearson appeared in Schimberg’s movies such as Chained for Life (released in 2019) and the suspenseful film Under the Skin (from 2013). In an interview, Pearson shared that prior to the start of the production in 2022, they had open, truthful discussions with Stan over video calls about their childhoods and personal backgrounds.

Stan excels as Edward, a character who, initially concealed under facial prosthetics, discovers an extraordinary remedy for his neurofibromatosis – a disease characterized by tumors that lead to physical deformities. However, he takes center stage in an off-Broadway production penned by his neighbor Renate Reinsve, whom he harbors feelings for. The play recounts his past and includes a character (Adam Pearson) who bears a striking resemblance to him.

On January 21, 2024, the film “A Different Man” debuted at Sundance, followed by its U.S. release on September 20, 2024.
