‘We Gave Them Their Moment’: Here’s When Monsters Creator Ryan Murphy Believes Menendez Brothers Will Walk Out of Prison

As a devoted fan of Ryan Murphy‘s captivating storytelling, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of Lyle and Erik Menendez potentially walking free by Christmas! The sheer drama and intrigue surrounding their case has been a rollercoaster ride, and I find myself riveted to every new development.

Ryan Murphy, the producer behind Monsters, is confident that the Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, will be released from prison by Christmas following one more court hearing. While Murphy isn’t planning a second season of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix, he did propose developing a few additional episodes to continue the story, assuming Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch are willing to reprise their roles.

More recently, there’s been a significant surge in media coverage about Lyle and Erik Menendez, particularly fueled by a Netflix series produced by Murphy. Notably, Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is examining fresh evidence suggesting that their father, Jose Menendez, abused his children sexually. These contested circumstances might provide strong grounds for reopening the case, potentially leading to a new trial or sentencing revision.

Murphy shared with Variety, “We provided them an opportunity in the court of public opinion, essentially offering them a stage. Personally, I am optimistic that they could be released by Christmas.

He praised the show as having adequate information, which brought attention to the case of Lyle and Erik murdering their parents in 1989 and serving life sentences in prison.

Shortly following Gascón’s disclosure of new evidence, reality star Kim Kardashian—who has met the incarcerated brothers—penned an article advocating for their release. Murphy pointed out that Kardashian became deeply involved in the case upon learning about the sexual abuse the brothers endured, as she watched Monsters before its Netflix premiere sparked her interest.

According to reports, Murphy initially didn’t feel compelled to help the brothers because, as a storyteller, he aims only to present a perspective. Yet, fresh evidence may have influenced his views on the matter.

In its ongoing narrative, Ryan Murphy has disclosed that Monsters’ third season will primarily focus on 1950s serial killer Ed Gein, portrayed by Charlie Hunnam. He explained, “I found the Menendez brothers less intriguing. What truly captivated me was the aspect of sexual abuse.” He was drawn to the idea that such revelations could be presented in the second trial and how they struck a chord with people around the world.
