WB Pushes James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ for Golden Globes as Oscar Favorite Emerges

Warner Bros. Discovery is heavily investing in promoting James Gunn’s Superman during awards season, with a focus on winning high-profile honors.

As reported by Variety, the studio has entered the summer hit film into the Golden Globes‘ drama categories. This indicates they want James Gunn’s new DC film to be recognized as a serious, artistic work, not just a typical superhero movie.

Golden Globes Drama Push

The film received nominations for Best Motion Picture (Drama), with David Corenswet up for Best Actor (Drama), Rachel Brosnahan for Best Supporting Actress, and Nicholas Hoult for Best Supporting Actor.

James Gunn is a strong contender for both Best Director and Best Screenplay, and the film’s original song, “The Mighty Crabjoy’s Theme” (created by Gunn, Eric Nally, and Devin Williams), is being considered for Best Original Song.

The film is also eligible for the Outstanding Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, given to movies that earn over $150 million globally. Currently, Superman is the third-highest-grossing film domestically this year, behind Disney’s Lilo & Stitch and Warner Bros.’ Minecraft movie.

The Golden Globe nominations will be announced on Dec. 8.

Early Oscar Buzz for Visual Effects

According to Variety, Warner Bros.’ campaign for the Oscars has already generated buzz around Superman as a strong contender for the Best Visual Effects award. The film’s visual effects are spearheaded by a team including Stéphane Ceretti, Enrico Damm, Stéphane Nazé, and Guy Williams.

The creative team behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 also worked on this project. Experts are predicting awards recognition for the film’s sound, makeup, and hairstyling, led by professionals like Lee Orloff, David Acord, Katy Wood, Chris Boyes, Tim Leblanc, Alexei Dmitriew, Peter Swords King, and Shane Mahan.

A significant issue has arisen: the film’s score by John Murphy and David Fleming won’t be eligible for an Oscar. This is because it borrows heavily from John Williams’ iconic 1978 Superman theme, and the Academy requires original scores to be at least 35% unique.

DC’s Awards Track Record

Warner Bros. has previously achieved awards recognition with its DC films, notably Joker (2019), which won Golden Globe and Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Score. James Gunn’s work at Marvel has also been recognized by the Academy, with films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Vol. 2 receiving nominations for visual effects and makeup.
