TV reboots often fall flat, struggling to recapture what made the original shows special. However, Bel-Air successfully reimagined The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, offering a dramatic and compelling new take. While staying true to the core elements of the original, Bel-Air often explored darker and more emotional storylines. Like the original, Will Smith’s character still positively impacted the Banks family and grew as a person. Throughout its four seasons, the show included appearances from original cast members like Janet Hubert and Tatyana Ali. In a touching and unexpected moment, Will Smith himself made a cameo in the series finale, offering guidance to his younger on-screen self.
I was so excited when I heard about Bel-Air! You know, Will Smith basically started his career with The Fresh Prince, and I loved seeing how the creator, Morgan Cooper, had this whole dramatic take on the show. Will himself saw the video and gave it his blessing, which was amazing. It quickly got picked up by Peacock, and now it’s had two seasons, with two more on the way! The finale was incredible. Seeing Will (played by Jabari Banks) standing on that cliff overlooking LA with Jazz and Carlton… it was powerful. But this Will is different from the original. He’s actually heading back to Philly to go to college! And then, the coolest part – Will Smith himself shows up right beside him. It was a really special moment.
The two men discuss the young man’s worry about returning home and losing sight of who he’s become. The older man assures him that he’ll stumble along the way, but he’ll learn and develop from his mistakes, and ultimately, everything will be alright. This strongly hints that the older man is a representation of Will’s future self, or at least a part of his inner thoughts and moral compass. It becomes clear the man isn’t real when Carlton reappears and the actor portraying Will Smith vanishes, signaling the end of the show, Bel-Air.
According to Carla Banks Waddles, who writes, directs, and produces the show, Will Smith’s appearance almost didn’t work out due to his busy schedule. They only confirmed he’d be able to act alongside his character about two weeks before filming began. It was a special moment, bringing things full circle. If you’re new to the show, all episodes of Bel-Air are available to stream on Peacock.
