The special episode began with a nostalgic flashback to when the Simpsons adopted their dog, Santa’s Little Helper. Many viewers will recall that the family first got Santa’s Little Helper way back in the show’s very first episode in 1989. According to showrunner Matt Selman, the episode starts by recreating the original Christmas scene where they get the dog, but then expands on it, even matching the older animation style. He admitted he loves that classic look and wishes they could use it for all episodes. The story then takes an unexpected turn: Marge rushes Santa’s Little Helper to the emergency vet after accidentally giving him grapes, leading to an appearance by characters from a storyline called The Pitt.
This special episode was a celebration of the show’s history, with many references to classic moments. As producer Selman explained, they included quick glimpses of Homer in outfits and situations from past episodes, jumping through time to cover both the last year and the show’s entire 40-year run. Because the characters never age, it’s like Springfield has only experienced one incredibly chaotic year! Luckily, baby Maggie is too young to remember any of it, though she might need years of therapy with Dr. Pryor if she does. Let’s hope not, Maggie!
