Watch Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito Talk About Their Time Playing the Penguin

The “Actors on Actors” series by Variety has been a genuine pleasure, facilitating captivating, intimate discussions between renowned stars. In one of the latest installments, actors who share the iconic role of DC Comics’ Penguin had an opportunity to reminisce and swap stories – Colin Farrell and Danny DeVito. Having initially bonded while working together on Tim Burton’s “Dumbo,” they both fondly spoke about Burton in their nearly hour-long chat, which you can watch in the video below.

Without a doubt, they primarily discussed their portrayals of the Batman adversary, the Penguin, during their conversation. Farrell recently played this role in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman”, and also in “The Penguin” series on Max. Interestingly, Danny DeVito took on the part in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns” back in 1992. Their interpretations of the renowned DC Comics villain were significantly distinct: Farrell portrayed a more grounded “Oz Cobb”, while DeVito embodied the more comical “Oswald Cobblepot”. Despite these differences, both actors underwent an extremely detailed makeup process to transform into the Penguin. It was fascinating to discover that they both found this makeup process quite soothing and expressed nothing but admiration for their respective makeup teams.

Indeed, both actors shared screen time with Catwoman during filming. Both Farrell and DeVito held nothing but admiration for their respective Selina Kyles, Zoe Kravitz and Michelle Pfeiffer. In truth, DeVito couldn’t help but express his infatuation towards Pfeiffer in the iconic skintight catsuit, referring to her as “lustful.” Both actors described their feline femme fatale co-stars as “goddesses,” a sentiment with which we wholeheartedly agree. It was intriguing to witness Farrell’s affection for DeVitto’s work in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and it’s equally delightful to see that DeVito appreciated Farrell’s portrayal of The Penguin on Max. Given their comfort with the makeup chair and shared appreciation for Tim Burton, perhaps they could both make an appearance as eccentric Addams cousins in Wednesday‘s third season? Netflix, let’s bring this idea to life!
