Beyond being known as one of the world’s most handsome individuals, Henry Cavill boasts an impressive acting career. He donned the cape and played Superman in three different movies, also starring as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series. Add to that a role in Mission Impossible and a stint as Sherlock Holmes, and his resume is quite impressive indeed. However, he hasn’t had the chance (yet) to play James Bond. But in 2005, a relatively unknown Henry Cavill auditioned for the part of 007 for what would become the reboot of the franchise, Casino Royale. Recently, footage from Cavill’s audition tapes for the role has been released, allowing us to see him, with a rather Jon Snow-like hairstyle, giving it his all.
A person named Ron South unearthed a video clip from a VHS tape he found in a studio’s recycling bin, and he swears it was him who discovered it (during what could be considered dumpster diving). In the same batch of tapes, he stumbled upon audition tapes for Rupert Friend, Sam Worthington from ‘Avatar’, and Anthony Starr, later known as Homelander. At the time of this James Bond audition, Henry Cavill was only 22 years old, which was before his major role in ‘The Tudors’. This particular audition scene might be familiar to ardent Bond fans. Interestingly, it’s not from ‘Casino Royale’, but rather ‘Goldeneye’, featuring Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. The scene in question depicts a brief interaction between 007 and Xenia Onatopp, the Russian Bond girl played by Famke Janssen before her role in ‘X-Men’.
In essence, Martin Campbell’s decision to cast Daniel Craig instead of Henry Cavill in Casino Royale was a logical one given his aim to reboot the Bond series with a more grounded and rugged 007 after the previous films veered towards camp. At that time, Cavill, being relatively young, didn’t quite fit the gritty image they were going for in the audition process. However, his performance in later films such as The Man From U.N.C.L.E suggests he may be worth another look. As for Daniel Craig, he has made it clear that he doesn’t particularly care who takes over from him as Bond, even if Kermit the Frog were to be considered. If Henry Cavill gets another chance to audition, it could very well be him.
