In a recent claim, it’s suggested that the shape of Raven-Symoné, renowned for her role in Disney Channel’s That’s So Raven, may have been subtly modified digitally to appear slimmer during an episode focusing on body positivity.

In Ashley Spencer’s latest book, Disney High: The Untold Story of the Rise and Fall of Disney Channel’s Tween Empire, Dava Savel, a co-producer and writer on That’s So Raven, shares her insights.

As reported by Savel, there were concerns among producers regarding Raven-Symoné’s weight, and they opted to address the issue indirectly rather than communicating with her personally.

In the episode named “That’s So Not Raven,” it aimed to deliver a message about self-acceptance, but according to reports, the storyline on set might have told a different tale altogether.

During an interview with Disney High, Dava Savel discussed how the production team addressed concerns about Raven-Symoné’s physical appearance. At that time, the actress was 18 years old. Savel explained that producers were uncomfortable with her weight and their handling of the issue was less than ideal. However, it didn’t involve any direct confrontation or criticism on Symoné’s part.

In the second season of the series, an episode titled “That’s So Not Raven” aired, which revolved around the character Raven Baxter, portrayed by Raven-Symoné. This particular episode depicted a scenario where Raven was rejected from a fashion show because of her size.

In the series, Raven’s personality experiments with various diet plans, yearning to belong. However, she ultimately learns to embrace her unique selfhood. The production aimed to convey a message of body acceptance, culminating in Raven confidently strutting down the runway at the finale.

As reported by Savel, it was requested that the appearance of Raven-Symoné be modified digitally in the final runway scene to give an impression of slenderness.

Apart from Savel, it wasn’t just one individual voicing concerns about the suspected edits. Another production team member, Michael Feldman, also expressed his displeasure over how Raven-Symoné was handled in the situation.

According to Spencer’s book, Feldman expressed his dismay by saying, “It was despicable.” He couldn’t comprehend how one could perform such an act after knowing it was the exact subject she intended to write about.

As a devoted fan, I must say that Feldman criticized the producers for being out of touch, suggesting they missed the irony of altering Raven-Symoné’s appearance in an episode advocating self-acceptance. Contrasting the show’s message, it seemed that the events unfolding behind the scenes were at odds with the positive image presented to the young audience.

The body editing techniques used in one episode extended to multiple episodes. Adam Bonnett, who previously oversaw original programming at Disney Channel, verified that these special effects weren’t just a one-time thing. In fact, according to Bonnett, visual edits were made in various other episodes to make Raven-Symoné’s outfits look more stylish and appealing.

Previously open about her battles with body image during her time on “That’s So Raven,” Raven-Symoné recently disclosed on “The Best Podcast Ever with Raven and Miranda” that she underwent breast reduction surgery and liposuction while filming the show, a move taken to quell persistent remarks about her weight.

For four consecutive years, from 2003 to 2007, the actress graced the screens in the series That’s So Raven. While her character consistently delivered uplifting messages on television, it seems that her personal journey with body image was more intricate and challenging.
