Was Josh Gad Denied A Role In James Cameron’s Avatar Because of His Looks? Find Out

Josh Gad unveils past anecdotes in his fresh memoir titled In Gad We Trust. Renowned for his knack of amusing audiences with iconic characters on screen, this accomplished actor has confessed that he nearly landed a role in the 2009 hit film Avatar, directed by James Cameron.

In my latest book, I’ve shared an intriguing tale – how I tried out for a groundbreaking film project by none other than James Cameron, titled “Avatar.”

This way, the sentence is in the first person and maintains a conversational tone, making it more engaging for the reader.

In his memoirs, the actor from Murder on the Orient Express stated that he recorded myself and soon received a phone call inviting me to travel to Los Angeles for a concluding audition at Cameron’s Lightstorm production offices.

Later on, Josh Gad disclosed that he didn’t end up landing the role. He explained this by saying that although James Cameron was pleased with his audition, there was an unforeseen problem with the movie’s digital team. When they converted him into a Na’vi, one of the film’s blue-skinned aliens, he reportedly resembled a tall, plump Smurf instead.

In the scenario where he got the part, Josh Gad would’ve taken on the role of Jake Sully’s friend, who was not only a talented actor but also a proficient interpreter for the alien species. However, it was Sam Worthington who ended up playing Jake Sully in the movie.

Ultimately, the part was assigned to Joel David Moore, who depicted the character of Norm Spellman in the initial Avatar film. Norm Spellman served as a trusted companion to Jake Sully and boasted proficiency in the Na’vi tongue.

Avatar was released on December 18, 2009, and has earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide to date.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’m thrilled to share that the follow-up to the groundbreaking film, Avatar, titled “Avatar: The Way of Water,” graced our screens in the year 2022. Fast forward to December 19, 2025, when we can all immerse ourselves once more in the breathtaking world of Pandora with the release of the third installment, “Avatar: Fire and Ash.”
