As a lifestyle expert with a keen interest in Hollywood history, I must say that the revelations about James Dean‘s life in the upcoming book “Jimmy: The Secret Life of James Dean” are nothing short of shocking. It’s always disheartening to learn about such dark chapters in the lives of our beloved icons.
As a devoted fan, I’ve learned quite a bit about James Dean from an upcoming book. What intrigues me the most is the revelation that this iconic actor was once blackmailed by a past romantic partner who happened to be of the same gender.
Based on Jason Colavito’s upcoming book, it is claimed that James Dean faced threats from his ex-lover Rogers Brackett prior to his rise in the Hollywood film industry. As reported by Daily Mail on November 15, 2024, Colavito alleges that Brackett demanded $800 from Dean back in 1954.
As I prepared for the upcoming premiere of “East of Eden” in 1955, a financial matter arose between myself and James Dean. He had been struggling financially during his time in New York, and I had reportedly covered some of his expenses, including approximately $450 on hotel bills and more.
In the text, it says that Brackett requested a drink from Dean and, using a friendlier approach, asked him for some funds, which Brackett referred to as a loan.
In response to Brackett, Dean politely declined, stating “Sorry, old man,” and refused to return his money. The actor from Rebel Without a Cause had grown apart from Brackett, showing no interest in reconnecting; he was still angered by their past abusive relationship. However, things changed when Alec Wilder entered the picture, as Brackett was collaborating with him on an opera, following his loss of an advertising job and financial struggles.
In the book, Wilder instructed Dean not only to compose an apology to Brackett but also loudly demanded that he pen a statement saying “Brackett should file a lawsuit against Dean for all the assistance provided over the years.
Not long after, Brackett dispatched a formal, legally binding letter to the actor featured in the 1981 romantic musical film “One from the Heart. In this correspondence, he requested repayment of the $1,200 he had lent Dean during their relationship.
According to the author, the letter contained a warning that it would reveal James Dean’s sexual orientation unless he paid up.
After a lawsuit by Brackett for $1,400 in New York’s Municipal Court, Dean settled the matter by paying $800 initially and promising to make weekly payments of $100 to prevent local gossip from spreading in H-town.
While it’s rumored that Dean’s representative agreed to a substantial “finder’s fee” from Warner Bros., this payment was apparently intended to ensure Brackett’s silence.
Jimmy: The Secret Life of James Dean will be out on November 19, 2024.
