Justin Baldoni‘s legal dispute with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively has expanded to include Marvel Studios, as per recent court papers obtained by TMZ. Baldoni is contesting Marvel’s effort to prevent the service of his subpoena. The subpoena seeks documents concerning the characters Reynolds portrays in Deadpool and Wolverine, including a fresh character named ‘Nicepool.’
Justin Baldoni asserts that Nicepool is an intentional caricature of himself, and he requests Marvel to safeguard and deliver any records concerning the character’s origin.
Last week, Marvel filed a motion to discard the subpoena, stating that the requested documents were not pertinent to Baldoni’s current legal proceedings. However, Baldoni counters that these documents are essential for establishing Reynolds’ alleged intention to damage his reputation.
Baldoni draws attention to particular moments in Deadpool & Wolverine as evidence for his statements. He argues that the character of Nicepool makes comments that echo accusations leveled against him. For instance, in one scene, Nicepool praises Ladypool, portrayed by Blake Lively, by commenting on her postpartum figure, saying “you can’t even tell.” In another scene, he expresses confusion about the absence of an intimacy coordinator by asking, “Where in heaven’s name is the intimacy coordinator?!
Baldoni interprets these remarks as sarcastic criticisms that Blake levied against him, allegations including body-shaming and sexual misconduct on the set of “It Ends With Us.” He also perceives the term ‘feminist’ used by Nicepool as a subtle jab at his public role as a supporter and advocate during the film’s promotional activities.
Marvel clarifies that the character from Nicepool has no connection whatsoever with Baldoni. They assert in their court filing that the humor in the film is purely an expression of opinion, not a factual statement.
It is being contended that the plot, dialogue, and characters within the film are unrelated to Baldoni’s legal matters concerning Blake and Ryan. Marvel maintains a stance that the material contained in the movie should not be admitted as proof in Baldoni’s private court case.
In spite of this, Baldoni continues to assert that the humor in Deadpool and Wolverine was not accidental and wonders about the role Ryan played in crafting or molding the dialogue.
Ryan Reynolds is making efforts to dismiss Baldoni’s lawsuit. His lawyers assert that Baldoni is excessively sensitive, or “thin-skinned,” regarding a fictional character, and that his accusations against Reynolds are more about personal feelings than actual legal infractions. Reynolds maintains that the lawsuit is baseless and the actor’s issues with Nicepool stem from personal insecurities rather than any genuine violations of law.
