‘Was A Little Risky’: Jennifer Grey Reveals Why She Thought Dirty Dancing Might Be A ‘Glorified Porno’

As a devoted fan of Dirty Dancing and a connoisseur of behind-the-scenes stories, I find Jennifer Grey‘s journey to play Baby Houseman absolutely captivating. Her recollections of the film’s production, her initial apprehensions about Patrick Swayze, and their eventual bond through dance, all paint a vivid picture of the making of a cinematic classic.

In a fresh take: Dirty Dancing stands as a timeless movie favorite, propelling Jennifer Grey into an unforgettable career highlight as Baby. Yet, during its production, she felt the character was overly daring and “provocative.” On the Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast on December 20, Grey shared her journey to landing that iconic role.

She recounted, “I clearly remember being in my agent’s office, looking at the script, and thinking, ‘I need to land this role.'” Reflecting back, she mentioned that the film was a relatively low-budget production, an uncommon occurrence during that time. Despite this, the actress associated with Red Dawn accepted the offer for the movie, which had a budget of $4.5 million. Her payment for the role ranged between $50,000 and $100,000.

1) She mentioned that the film was somewhat daring due to its graphic sex scenes and lack of funding. Grey then quipped, “It might as well be a pornography.” Following her casting as Frances “Baby” Houseman, the search for her Johnny Castle commenced. As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but reminisce about the magical moment when Patrick Swayze clinched the role that catapulted him to Hollywood stardom as a heartthrob. The story unfolds around Baby, a young woman who spends her summer at a Catskills resort with her family, and her enchanting love story with Johnny, the camp’s dancing maestro played none other than by Patrick Swayze himself. As if it were destiny, it was his exceptional dance abilities that sealed the deal for him landing this iconic role.

Previously collaborating with him on Red Dawn, she originally objected to Swayze being cast as her romantic co-star on-screen. Back then, she stated, “I’ve known this man inside out.” She alleged that the actor had a tendency to play pranks and exhibit bravado during filming.

I can’t stand being involved with someone who undermines me, someone I can’t rely on to be sincere or dedicated. Yet, somehow, they managed to change my mind, and I’m grateful for it!

She disclosed that Swayze expressed regret for his past actions towards her, expressed a desire to play the role, and subsequently, they shared an emotional moment – both of them crying, hugging, and then dancing together. Later, during their dance, she realized he was the ideal partner for her in the movie. This is how it went on the podcast.
