Although James Gunn has recently commended Matt Reeves and his Batman series, recent reports hint at some genuine friction occurring off-screen.
As reported by Puck News, James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-heads of DC Studios, have been waiting for Matt Reeves to submit the script for “Batman: Part II” over a year ago. It’s now been three years since “The Batman” was released in theaters and brought in close to $800 million. With a sequel having been announced almost immediately, it appears that Warner Bros. executives, particularly CEO David Zaslav, are becoming increasingly anxious about the delay in production.
Script Delivery Is Imminent
The report indicates that Reeves will submit his complete script on Monday, initiating the following stage of development. For the moment, this might alleviate some concerns; however, the delays have apparently sparked irritation across various tiers of the company since Batman is a significant intellectual property for Warner Bros.
According to Puck News, the co-heads of DC, Gunn and Safran, had been waiting for the script for over a year, and this delay has led to frustration among the executives, including David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Discovery.
Rumors of Trouble Behind the Scenes
According to reports, there were rumors that Warner Bros. might part ways with Reeves if the script wasn’t submitted promptly. However, it’s important to note that these delays aren’t entirely unexpected, given Reeves’ reputation for being a detail-oriented director who works at a more leisurely pace. Additionally, personal issues are said to have played a role in the project’s postponement.
On the very same day as the Puck article, Gunn openly responded to the rumors, offering support for Reeves instead.
People should stop bothering Matt about writing the screenplay too quickly as everyone needs time to complete their work, and Matt doesn’t owe anyone a script just because they enjoy his movies. Instead, people like his movies because of Matt, so let him work at his own pace.
Gunn’s reply comes across as straightforward, but it unmistakably expresses his backing for Reeves. It seems he has no intentions, at least outwardly, of pushing Reeves out or hastening the creative workflow.
Will The Batman 2 Still Hit Its Release Date?
According to Puck News, there’s a possibility that the release date of Reeves’ “The Batman: Part II,” currently set for October 1, 2027, may not remain the same.
According to a source within Warner Bros., it’s planned to initiate filming in January 2026, following Robert Pattinson’s completion of work on Dune 3. If the script and pre-production continue smoothly, the projected release date in 2027 could remain unchanged.
But if anything slips further? All bets are off.
The site reports that according to a Warner Bros source, they are still intending to start filming in January, following Robert Pattinson’s completion of Dune 3. This would allow for sufficient time to maintain the schedule, but only if the script and preproduction progress smoothly from now on. So, we’ll have to wait and see…
