Warner Bros Launches ‘Superman’ Oscars Campaign

Warner Bros. Discovery is launching an official campaign to get James Gunn’s Superman recognized by the Academy Awards. This is the first film in the new DC Universe created by Gunn.

An FYC (For Your Consideration) campaign is how movie studios try to get the attention of Academy Award voters. They spend a lot of money – often millions – on things like screenings, advertisements, and events to encourage voters to nominate their films.

This marketing push shows Warner Bros. is positioning the new Superman movie as a potential awards winner, going beyond simply aiming for big box office numbers. However, that doesn’t guarantee it will actually win – or even be nominated for – an Oscar.

The award for Best Original Song goes to “The Mighty Crabjoys Theme,” written by James Gunn, Eric Nally, and Devin Williams, and performed by The Mighty Crabjoys.

The movie portrays Superman grappling with his dual identity. He’s torn between his Kryptonian heritage as Kal-El and his human upbringing in Smallville, Kansas. In a world that often overlooks kindness, he’s determined to use his powers for good and protect humanity, but this proves challenging.

Industry professionals will have a chance to view the film at special screenings on November 5th at Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank, and on November 28th and December 25th at the Directors Guild of America theaters.

Besides Superman, Warner Bros. is also highlighting several other films, including One Battle After Another, Sinners, Weapons, and A Minecraft Movie.

Superman’s Oscar History

I still remember how amazing the visual effects were in the original Superman: The Movie from 1978! It was the last Superman film to actually win an Oscar – a special one for those effects, deservedly so. And it wasn’t just that – the movie was also nominated for a bunch of other awards, including Best Film Editing, John Williams’ incredible original score, and the sound design. It really was a groundbreaking film.

No other Superman film — including Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013) — has received an Oscar win.

This means the upcoming Superman movie, scheduled for 2025, is Warner Bros.’ first major attempt to win an Academy Award for the character in almost 50 years.
