Warner Bros. Execs Will Celebrate If “Superman” Hits $500 Million, But Will That Be Enough?

In this new interpretation of the timeless DC character Superman, director James Gunn presents a fresh perspective. Acting as Clark Kent and donning the iconic cape, David Corenswet takes on the role of our beloved superhero. This live-action film marks the beginning of a fresh chapter in the DC Universe, titled the DCU.

With Corenswet, the lineup also features Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. In this narrative, Superman must demonstrate his heroic qualities as Lex Luthor attempts to sway public opinion against him.

The journey leading to this film actually started several years back. Following the release of Man of Steel featuring Henry Cavill in 2013, a sequel was initially on the cards. However, the production challenges faced during Justice League in 2017 caused a shift in plans. By 2020, it was clear that the Man of Steel sequel had been canceled.

In 2022, James Gunn embarked on a new project for a Superman film. Later, he was appointed co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran. By the end of that year, Gunn confirmed his involvement in writing the movie. Initially titled “Superman: Legacy,” the subtitle was discarded at the start of 2024 during filming in Norway. Principal photography mainly occurred in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as other locations in Georgia and Ohio. The film takes inspiration from the comic series All-Star Superman.

On the 7th of July, 2025, Superman made its grand debut at the TCL Chinese Theater. Four days later, it hit U.S. cinemas on the 11th. Critics generally praised the film, and it garnered a box office start of $40.3 million.

Executives at Warner Bros. are anticipating that Superman will gross over $500 million globally, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Although this is an impressive sum, it pales in comparison to the billion-dollar blockbusters Marvel occasionally produces. Nevertheless, exceeding $500 million would still be considered a success for Warner Bros. What truly matters is that the audience appreciates the film and craves more. Superman represents the start of a larger strategy for the DC Universe. In the pipeline are projects such as a Supergirl spin-off, a Green Lantern TV series, and multiple new Batman films.

Prior to its release, both TheWrap and The Hollywood Reporter estimated that the film needed to generate at least $500 million globally just to cover costs, yet $700 million would signify a significant achievement. Some speculated that Superman could potentially earn over $1 billion worldwide due to the intense online curiosity surrounding the trailers. The combined expenses for producing and marketing the movie amounted to approximately $400 million.

Approximately three weeks prior to its launch, experts projected that the U.S. opening weekend for this upcoming release could range from $125 million to $145 million, surpassing Man of Steel’s initial earnings of $116 million. However, DC Studios and Warner Bros. exhibited more conservative estimates, forecasting an opening between $90 million and $125 million. Nevertheless, there was optimism for a $175 million debut, which would set a new record for any DC film, surpassing Batman v Superman’s initial box office take of $166 million.

In the excitement of the initial screenings, my movie raked in an impressive $2.8 million on its opening day, Tuesday, and amassed a total of $21 million by Thursday previews. This staggering $22.5 million from previews broke records for 2025, making it the largest preview for any James Gunn film ever! Furthermore, it surpassed Warner Bros.’ previous record set by Barbie, leaving me utterly astonished and grateful for the overwhelming response.

Initially, Superman seems potentially profitable, yet its earnings must be substantial enough to offset its substantial expenses and ignite the new DC Universe. Should it achieve success, fans may anticipate more thrilling tales from DC in the coming days. Time alone can confirm this.

If you have thoughts about the movie, feel free to share them in the comments!
