Warner Bros. Discovery Splits Back Into 2 Companies

Interestingly, not long after Max reclaimed “HBO” in its name following the removal of those three letters some time ago, another shift is being reversed – sort of. In 2022, WarnerMedia and Discovery merged into a single company, leading to some unexpected pairings like Jon Snow and Guy Fieri sharing space. This merger aimed to create an all-inclusive brand where high-quality TV met home improvement shows, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. However, the attempt to cater to everyone in every way resulted in disappointing many. And it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery has learned this lesson not only on their streaming platform but across their entire business. Consequently, they will now separate back into two distinct companies, with Warner Bros. Discovery essentially reverting to its original identity.

Here’s what we know about Warner Bros. Discovery’s move to become two companies once more.

What Are the Two Companies that Warner Bros. Discovery Is Splitting Into?

Warner Bros. Discovery is set to divide into two distinct entities, named “Streaming & Studios” and “Global Networks.” David Zaslav will remain at the helm for “Streaming & Studios,” while Gunnar Wiedenfels steps up as president and CEO for “Global Networks.

But what do these names actually mean?

What Will Streaming & Studios Contain?

The new streaming and production division of Warner Bros. Discovery, which we might refer to as WarnerMedia Plus, encompasses Warner Bros. Television, the Movie Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO and HBO Max (including its international sports offerings), Warner Bros. Games, Tours, Retail, and Experiences, along with studio production facilities in Burbank and Leavesden, as well as the film and television libraries of Warner Bros. In essence, it’s a comprehensive collection of everything that was under WarnerMedia.

What Will Global Networks Contain?

In summary, the second company under Warner Bros. Discovery, known as Global Networks, encompasses a variety of global entertainment, sports, and news television brands. This includes CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., top free-to-air channels across Europe, and digital services like the successful streaming platform Discovery+ and Bleacher Report.

What Does Warner Bros. Discovery’s Split Into Two Companies Mean For You?

In essence, the division of Warner Bros. Discovery into two separate entities might not significantly impact an ordinary viewer or consumer. Instead, this move appears to be primarily focused on restructuring financial investments and satisfying shareholder interests.

Zaslav acknowledges, “This renowned company’s cultural influence, as it has breathed life into impactful stories for over a century, has moved countless people globally. We are honored to preserve this valuable legacy as we embark on the next phase of our distinguished history. In the future, by functioning as two separate and optimized entities, we aim to provide these iconic brands with a more precise focus and strategic agility, enabling them to thrive in today’s rapidly changing media environment.

Generally speaking, it’s quite surprising that after facing a lot of criticism and uncertainty, Warner Bros. Discovery appears to be reconsidering all their decisions. Here’s hoping their future choices will be more successful and promising. After all, Zaslav isn’t off-base when he says that Warner Bros. has been impacting people for a very long time, and we’d like to see them continue to do so positively.
