Warner Bros. CEO Says Supergirl Is the 4th Pillar of the Most Important DC Heroes

DC Studios is gearing up to debut its first live-action project, with James Gunn’s Superman slated for release this summer. As anticipation builds around this potentially crucial film, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros., has emphasized that the four pillars supporting their DC Comics superhero universe are Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. The success or failure of the entire DC brand is heavily reliant on these iconic characters, according to Zaslav’s remarks during a recent Warner Bros. investor call, as reported by Comic Book Movie.

James Gunn and Peter Safran are working on a 10-year strategy for DC, which aims to enhance our global value by creating and showcasing iconic characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Supergirl in every corner of the world. These characters represent significant assets and unique selling points for us.

In a recent gathering in New York, Zaslav emphasized that these four elements serve as the foundation of DC. However, one might question whether this statement holds water or if it’s merely a promotional tactic due to an upcoming Supergirl movie. Given Supergirl’s significant status among DC Comics heroes, it’s plausible she needs more support. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to note that while Supergirl is indeed a renowned hero for DC, the Flash and Green Lantern have also been running as series for nearly as long. However, considering the underwhelming performance of the Green Lantern and Flash films, Warner Bros. might prefer not to focus on them at this moment.

Mentioning Supergirl as one of DC’s main pillars isn’t a bad thought, it certainly adds a welcome gender balance to the lineup. If we consider sidekicks and spin-offs, logically it should be Robin or Nightwing. However, Dick Grayson doesn’t have an upcoming movie, while Kara Zor-El does. Interestingly, Zaslav also mentions Wonder Woman in this context. Given she’s part of the DC Trinity, this makes sense. But there’s no announced solo project for Wonder Woman, and the series “Paradise Lost” seems to be moving slowly. Could Zaslav’s mention of Wonder Woman signal an upcoming announcement? It could very well be. If Superman and Supergirl become successful, it wouldn’t be surprising if Wonder Woman makes a comeback soon.
