As a dedicated fan of Luke Combs, I find his humility and dedication to perfection truly admirable. The story of his “Fast Car” cover blunder and subsequent rectification is a testament to his respect for artists like Tracy Chapman and his unwavering commitment to delivering the best performance possible. It’s not every day that an artist gets the chance to learn from the original creator, and Combs seized this opportunity with grace and determination.
Luke Combs, known for his country music, recently recorded a cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” which garnered him a Grammy nomination for Best Country Solo Performance. He confessed he made an error in the lyrics during the recording, and it was none other than Tracy Chapman who gently highlighted his mistake.
During his latest performance, Combs was reminded of an error that would forever linger in his memory. A concertgoer’s TikTok video showed that instead of singing “We gotta make a decision,” he accidentally recorded it as “Still gotta make a decision.” He admitted to the audience that this mistake struck him while he was speaking with Chapman.
He realized for the first time that he had recorded the song incorrectly, and she was the one who pointed it out to him. When she told him, he remembered feeling so embarrassed that he wished he could hide away. Luckily, she took it in stride, but every time he sang the song after that, he couldn’t help but be reminded of his mistake. “I will always remember my error every time I sing this song from now on,” he concluded.
After making the announcement, Combs shared that he would perform the authentic version instead of his recorded one. He said, “Tonight, I’ll be singing ‘We gotta make a decision.’ Tracy Chapman asked me to do so, and I’m not going to let you down.” The Grammy-nominated artist had released his cover of the timeless 1988 country song in April 2023, which gained immense popularity among fans.
30 years after its creation, the song climbed to second place on the Billboard Hot 100, dominated country music charts, and garnered numerous accolades for the singer. At the 66th Grammy Awards in February, Combs – who was nominated that night – took the stage with Chapman, the original creator of the song. Before their performance, Chapman expressed her joy at seeing people still enjoying the song three decades later.
She expressed surprise at one point about being on the country music charts, yet felt privileged to be included. Furthermore, she voiced her happiness for Luke’s achievements and thanked the new fans who discovered and accepted ‘Fast Car.’
