As a crypto enthusiast reminiscing on my past misfortunes, I find myself recalling the unfortunate incident in 2013 when I, James Howells from Newport, Wales, accidentally discarded my Bitcoin hard drive in a landfill. Today, I learned that my legal struggle to retrieve the site and potentially recover my lost cryptocurrency has come to an end, leaving me with a heavy heart.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

In 2013, unfortunately, a laptop hard drive with around 8,000 Bitcoins was discarded by one of Howells’ partners in a garbage dump located in Newport, Wales.

Trying to capitalize on the possible worth of his misplaced Bitcoins, Howells aimed to retrieve the hard drive by suggesting a dig at the landfill site. In this endeavor, he proposed that he would finance the excavation and give 25% of the found Bitcoins to the city council.

Nevertheless, the Newport City Council turned down his proposal, pointing out the high expenses associated with excavation and the possible harm to the environment. For more than a decade, Howells persisted in his efforts, only to be met with repeated rejections by the council.

Today, Judge Keyser, who serves as the Circuit Commercial Judge for Wales, has declined James Howells’ request to dig up the Newport landfill in order to find his lost hard drive.

According to Judge Keyser’s decision, Howells lacked a valid basis for filing the claim and there was little chance of victory if the case went to trial.

A Reminder: The Bitcoin Pizza Day Story

The unfortunate incident involving Howells bears resemblance to the tale known as Bitcoin Pizza Day. In May 2012, a coder named Laszlo Hanyecz opted to purchase two pizzas from Papa John’s not through conventional methods like cash or credit cards, but rather by using Bitcoin instead.

10,000 Bitcoins were what Hanyecz paid for two pizzas back then, worth just $41. Incredibly, he didn’t know this simple pizza purchase would be remembered as the very first documented Bitcoin transaction in reality.

Laszlo Hanyecz posted on the Bitcoin Talk forum that he would exchange 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas – perhaps two large ones, so he’d have some leftovers for the next day.

Back in the day, a single Bitcoin transaction was equivalent to more than 708 million dollars as of today. And when Bitcoin reached over 100,000 dollars during the early days of December, those very same two pizzas that were bought with Bitcoins would’ve been valued at over one billion dollars.

From one perspective, the tales of Howells and Hanyecz serve as stark reminders of mishaps in the annals of digital currencies. However, viewed from another angle, these incidents also underscore the significant progress Bitcoin has made since it was born in 2009.
