Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is the latest installment in Rian Johnson’s popular mystery series. Starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, the 2025 film follows a new murder investigation, this time taking place within a struggling Catholic church.
The film boasts a fantastic cast, with stars like Josh O’Connor, Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Cailee Spaeny, Mila Kunis, Andrew Scott, Thomas Haden Church, and Daryl McCormack. Here’s a straightforward summary of the plot and how it concludes.
The impossible death of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks
The story opens with Reverend Jud Duplenticy, portrayed by Josh O’Connor, joining the staff at Our Lady of Perpetual Fortitude after a transfer. He finds the parish firmly under the control of Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, played by Josh Brolin, a stern leader with secrets.
During a church service, Wicks is found stabbed in a small closet near the altar. Because no one else was present, it appears to be an unsolvable crime. Detective Benoit Blanc arrives on the scene an hour later and starts to uncover hidden secrets among the churchgoers.
The group discovered Wicks’ plan to reveal everyone’s secrets and abandon the church, thanks to recordings made by Cy Draven. Adding to the drama, a hidden family fortune was also involved – a valuable jewel that Reverend Prentice Wicks, Jefferson’s grandfather, had secretly swallowed.
Here’s what happens
Wicks is poisoned with a paralytic, but ultimately killed by dentist Nat Sharp, who uses a real knife despite pretending it’s fake. When the monsignor seemingly comes back to life, it’s actually Samson Holt in disguise. Nat then kills Samson, hoping to steal the jewel for himself.
Martha Delacroix, who was fiercely loyal to Wicks, discovered what Nat was planning. She secretly swapped their coffee mugs, causing Nat to accidentally poison himself. Then, she carefully arranged the scene to look like Jefferson had killed Nat by throwing acid on him. Martha confessed everything to Jud, while Blanc overheard the conversation. She also revealed that she had poisoned herself to keep the jewel safe from those who wanted it for themselves.
The investigation ultimately reveals that Wicks exploited his followers for many years. Throughout the story, each church member struggles with their own feelings of guilt, anger, or long-held secrets, and Vera Draven discovers a shocking truth: Cy is actually Wicks’ son.
When Martha passed away, she was still holding the jewel. Jud decided to keep it safe and prevent more trouble. He changed the church’s name to Our Lady of Perpetual Grace, honoring Jefferson’s mother, Grace Wicks. He then concealed the jewel within a wooden statue of Jesus positioned above the altar, hoping to bring peace to the church community.
