
People chase shiny things. They really do. But mostly, they just want to not worry. Investing, you see, is mostly about postponing worry. And diversification? That’s just a fancy way of saying don’t put all your eggs in one basket, because baskets break. So it goes.
One-Stop Shopping, More or Less
There’s this fund, the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF – they call it VOO. It’s a mouthful, I know. It holds bits of around 500 of the biggest companies in the United States. The really big hitters. About 80% of the whole U.S. stock market, actually. It’s not a bad little collection, if you ignore the fact that everything eventually turns to dust.
It holds companies that do pretty much everything. Communication, consumer stuff, energy, the banks (bless their hearts), healthcare, building things, and, of course, technology. They weigh these companies by size. Bigger company, more influence. It’s a bit like high school.

What’s in it for You? (If Anything)
This VOO thing has a few features. Not spectacular, mind you, but useful.
- Low expense ratio: It costs very little to own. 0.03%. That means more of your money stays yours. It’s a small thing, but small things add up. Especially when you’re dead.
- Automatic resets: It updates itself. You don’t have to. It’s a quiet little miracle, really.
- Mirrors the S&P 500: It basically does what the S&P 500 does. The S&P 500 has done okay for a long time. So, VOO does too. It’s not a guarantee, of course. Nothing is.
So, you have 504 companies. They’re big. They run a lot of the country. It’s not perfect. It’s just… something. A way to postpone worry. A quiet accumulation. And in the grand scheme of things, isn’t that all any of us are doing? So it goes.
