Vitra, a Swiss furniture company and design archive, has once again brought back into production one of the final designs by the acclaimed French designer and engineer Jean Prouvé. This iconic piece is none other than the Antony Chair, which now returns in its original laid-back form featuring striking red hardware. By doing so, it offers a new generation of design enthusiasts the chance to experience the very first chair ever added to the Vitra Design Museum Collection.
In the 1950s, Ateliérs Jean Prouvé was chosen to supply furniture for Europe‘s largest student residence at Cité Universitaire in Antony, France, which it had originally designed. The design, reminiscent of famous pieces like the Compas Direction table, includes a chair with powder-coated red legs (Rouge Corsaire, one of Prouvé’s signature colors), a transverse tubular support system, and two metal brackets to hold up the European pine seat. The plywood shell has a unique grain that is enhanced by a wax finish for added protection.
In 1984, Rolf Fehlbaum, Chairman Emeritus of Vitra, obtained an original piece that marked the first chair added to the Vitra Design Museum Collection. This acquisition sparked a robust partnership between the Prouvé family and Vitra, leading to several reissues of cherished Prouvé designs and a 2006 exhibition celebrating his heritage.
