Viola Davis Says Playing Action Hero in G20 Brought ‘Levity’ in Her Life; Reveals Why She Didn’t Want Serious Roles

Viola Davis is a highly acclaimed EGOT winner, recognized for her powerful dramatic roles. Yet, her newest action-thriller, titled G20, marks a significant departure from her past projects. In a conversation with The Times of London, the actress explained her decision to take on this role, asserting that not every project needs to be aimed at winning an Academy Award.

“I wanted to do something that families could watch together — something popular,” Davis added.

The actress from “The Woman King” has garnered many awards, but her most notable victory was an Emmy for Exceptional Lead Actress in a Drama Series. This marked the first time a Black woman had received this award for her role in ABC’s series “How to Get Away With Murder.” Davis has been nominated for four Oscars and won one as Best Supporting Actress for “Fences.” Additionally, she has claimed two Tony Awards, along with numerous other accolades.

Absolutely! I could really use some humor in my life.

The G20 is being led by President Danielle Sutton (Davis), who finds herself in a critical predicament as terrorists seize control of the G20 summit. Consequently, she will need to draw upon her political acumen and military expertise to protect her nation, her people, and the global community, as suggested by the official summary.

The actress kept showing her enthusiasm about portraying a true-blue action hero, mentioning it would have thrilled her childhood self immensely. In interviews for the movie, she’s been delving deep into her character.

This week, Davis arrived in London early for the movie’s press event at Trafalgar Square. She donned an eye-catching black leather ensemble consisting of a halter-neck top and relaxed trousers, completed with black boots. To amplify her style, she opted for a bold red lipstick and dramatic blush.

G20 will be released on Prime Video on April 10.
