I’ve found myself deeply impressed by Vincent D’Onofrio‘s portrayal of Wilson Fisk, a Marvel villain who stands tall among the rest. Across three seasons of “Daredevil”, his impact was undeniable, but it didn’t stop there. His influence extended to series like “Hawkeye”, “Echo”, and now, “Daredevil: Born Again”.
However, if you’re dreaming about seeing Fisk on the big screen, I regret to say that might not come true. In an interview with IGN, D’Onofrio revealed some disappointing news. The rights and ownership of the character make it impossible for him to appear in any movie. During his appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, D’Onofrio told host Josh Horowitz exactly that: Fisk can’t be part of a film production.
I’m primarily limited to being used for TV series, with no prospects for a standalone Wilson Fisk film. The complications surrounding rights make it uncertain if or when this situation might change.
In this scenario, we don’t have definite legal information, but we can make an informed assumption. The character Kingpin first appeared in the 1967 issue #50 of Amazing Spider-Man, and for quite some time, he was a significant antagonist to Spiderman. Later on, writers like Frank Miller moved him into Daredevil’s storyline, making him Matt Murdock’s primary adversary. However, since he originated as a villain in the Spider-Man universe, Sony might retain the film rights for the character, but not the TV rights. This is likely why Kingpin was the main antagonist in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It’s possible that this is also how he made an appearance in the original Daredevil series initially.
Our theory has some inconsistencies because Wilson Fisk, who debuted in the 2003 Daredevil movie portrayed by Michael Clark Duncan, was produced by 20th Century Fox, while Sony held the rights for Spider-Man films at that time. This suggests that Kingpin might have been a character co-owned by two studios like Quicksilver. In fact, this happened with actors playing the same characters in different movies within the same year, such as in X-Men and Avengers films. As a result, we haven’t seen a big-screen Fisk yet, which is unfortunate. Fortunately, D’Onofrio delivers a stellar performance as Kingpin across various Marvel TV shows, making up for the lack of a big-screen appearance. In this case, the small screen benefits from what could have been on the big screen.
