At the Golden Globes on Sunday, Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had an unexpected encounter that revived talks about their ongoing dispute, first reported in 2017 during filming of The Fate of the Furious. This brief but meaningful moment brought back memories of their long-standing disagreement, which was previously a hot topic.
The incident unfolded as Diesel stepped onto the stage to hand out the Box Office Achievement Award. As he was about to declare the victor, he glanced below and called out, “Hi, Dwayne,” referring to Johnson who was among the spectators.
Johnson’s smile prompted some uneasy chuckles among the audience members. Yet, despite its brevity, the exchange didn’t escape the notice of both fans and attendees. In fact, it sparked comparisons to the well-known Will Smith-Chris Rock Oscar incident, albeit maintaining a more playful tone.
The relationship between Diesel and Johnson can be traced back to their days working on the movie The Fate of the Furious. In August 2016, Johnson shared an Instagram post (since removed) that criticized certain unnamed male co-stars for acting in a non-professional manner and labeled them as not standing up to challenges. It was eventually revealed that his comments were directed towards Diesel.
Johnson implied underlying conflict on set by saying, “If you watch this movie next April and it appears I’m not acting in certain scenes and I seem genuinely angry, then you’re correct.” Afterward, they didn’t appear together at press events or share any scenes in the film.
In 2019, Johnson seemed to offer a gesture of peace, thanking Diesel for his backing of Hobbs & Shaw, a movie where he and Jason Statham shared the screen. But later on, Diesel characterized his interactions with Johnson as ‘tough love,’ causing Johnson to respond with some good-natured humor.
Johnson chuckled heartily… He wishes the team all the success in Fast 9, Fast 10, and Fast 11, indicating that he won’t be coming back for future installments of the main series.
In 2021, I couldn’t contain my excitement when Diesel publicly begged Johnson to rejoin the franchise for its final chapter, labeling the part as crucial. At first, Johnson politely declined, but boy, was I taken aback when he surprised us all with a cameo in Fast X (2023)!
In June 2023, Johnson publicly announced on social media that he and Diesel had settled their disagreements. “Last summer, Vin and I chose to leave our past issues behind us,” he posted. “We will lead with brotherhood, determination, and always prioritize the franchise, characters, and FANS we hold dear, moving forward.
