As a dedicated follower of true crime stories who has been captivated by the Menendez brothers’ saga since its unfolding in the 90s, I must admit that my initial excitement for Ryan Murphy’s latest series, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” has quickly waned. While I understand the artistic liberties taken in portraying such complex stories, it appears that this time, the line between fact and fiction may have been crossed.
While a lot of people are enjoying what Ryan Murphy brought to screen through the series, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the latter has come forth slamming the season for a lot of alleged misinformation.
The current series of ‘Monsters’ delves into the lives of Lyle and Erik Menendez, two brothers who were found guilty of killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1996.
In the meantime, Erik Menendez re-shared a post from his wife Tammi Menendez on social media, which was published on Thursday.
The statement stated that it was thought that we had gone past the deceitful representations and destructive character depictions of Lyle, forming a distorted image of Lyle based on excessive and obvious flaws prevalent in the series.
In his statement, Erik also mentioned that Ryan Murphy cannot be this naive and also inaccurate when it comes to portraying the facts, that are about his and his brother Lyle’s lives.
The misinformation in the series has been put in on purpose, Erik Menendez wrote in his statement.
In conversation regarding Netflix, Erik expressed his disappointment over what he perceives as their misleading depiction of tragic events. He believes this distortion has had a negative impact on the truth, setting it back significantly.
The truth has been taken to a time when prosecution believed that males were not sexually assaulted and also that the males experienced rape and trauma in a different way than a female, the statement read.
Additionally, Erik mentioned that these beliefs have been challenged over the past several years by courageous individuals who spoke up about their feelings, thus dispelling the stigma associated with them.
Now, Murphy constructs a disturbing story using despicable representations of Lyle and myself, along with dismaying insults. He even tarnishes my reputation with unjust accusations. Erik questions at the end, ‘Aren’t the facts themselves enough?’
In the early 1990s, the Menendez brothers’ case was frequently featured in news headlines. They alleged that they had killed their parents because they had been subjected to years of sexual abuse by their father, with their mother being aware of it.
After a lengthy court case, Erik and Lyle were both given sentences of life imprisonment with no chance for parole.
The series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story stars Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch as Lyle Menendez and Erik Menendez, respectively.
Meanwhile, the role of their parents has been portrayed by Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny.
