Tom Cruise demonstrated an extraordinary level of commitment for the Mission: Impossible film series, performing a daring feat that included leaping from a cliff on a motorcycle during the filming of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1. He himself described this as his most audacious stunt to date, pushing the boundaries of his already impressive daredevilry.
The film was shot across various locations worldwide. Initial filming was scheduled to commence in Venice, Italy, in February 2020; however, with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in Italy, all work came to a halt. Several weeks afterward, the crew resumed rehearsing stunts back in England.
In August 2020, Cruise and his team were granted authorization to film in Norway, the location where they later executed the iconic motorcycle leap from a cliff. Director Christopher McQuarrie shared behind-the-scenes images on Instagram when production commenced in September 2020. Additionally, Cruise filmed a hazardous train fight sequence in Norway, perched precariously atop a moving train alongside actor Esai Morales.
While shooting a movie in Oxfordshire, England, a fire occurred on a motorbike stunt setup. The Daily Mail mentioned that this particular scene, known as one of the costliest action sequences ever filmed in the U.K., took six weeks to prepare. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Filming occasionally encountered bumps in the road. In Italy, production was halted once more when 12 crew members contracted COVID-19. Meanwhile, in London, Cruise is reported to have angrily scolded crew members who violated safety protocols, stating he didn’t want production shut down due to negligence. Many fans and fellow actors stood by him following this incident. Some even thought his outburst resembled his character Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder.
One of the most discussed sequences in the movie was centered around a major train collision. The production team initially aimed to shoot this scene at the Swiss Alps, but were prohibited from exploding a bridge there. They then searched for an alternative location and discovered an antiquated railway bridge in Poland. Unfortunately, the locals were displeased upon learning that filmmakers intended to demolish a piece of their historical bridge for the movie.
1912 saw the construction of a bridge, as reported by Polish newspapers such as Gazeta Wyborcca. This bridge endured not one but two global conflicts – the world wars. Following numerous demonstrations and pleas, the bridge was ultimately preserved and incorporated into Poland’s national cultural legacy.
In an Instagram post, Director McQuarrie clarified that the plan wasn’t to destroy the entire bridge; instead, only a hazardous section was intended to be demolished. Furthermore, he expressed that no disrespect was meant in this action. However, despite his explanation, the issue escalated, and producer Andrew Eksner filed a lawsuit against the film crew for allegedly breaching their contract.
Due to the impossibility of exploding a Polish bridge, the team instead constructed a replica railway line and bridge on the border of an English quarry in the Peak District. In August 2021, they captured the spectacular train crash footage by pushing a miniature train model over a cliff.
The parachute and speed-flying sequences were filmed in England’s Lake District during the summers of 2021 and 2022. Cruise performed daredevil leaps from high cliffs at High Crag and Robinson, landing close to the lake. These scenes were among the most perilous in the film. The Norwegian team also aided the production crew in safely executing the motorcycle jump scene.
During the entire filming process, Tom Cruise consistently tested boundaries, a behavior that McQuarrie described as simply being part of his nature. Now, viewers understand the amount of effort, danger, and potential scandal involved in creating these stunts. Yet, it appears that Cruise remains content to take risks for each new installment of Mission: Impossible.
