Since 1973, television has featured Star Trek animations, starting with Star Trek: The Animated Series on Saturday mornings. This tradition continues today with shows like Lower Decks and Prodigy. However, one type of Star Trek animation we’ve never had – at least not officially until now – is a Star Trek anime. Thanks to YouTuber fan Miss Mello, discovered through Laughing Squid, that gap has been filled. By using audio from the 1967 classic episode trailer “The Trouble With Tribbles,” and animating it in an ’80s anime style, they’ve created something truly special. You can watch this charming video below:
The classic episode “The Trouble With Tribbles” is a comedic gem that has endured over time. Its humor aligns perfectly with the zany style of ’80s anime, making it a fitting pairing. As for this video’s fight scenes between the Enterprise crew and Klingons, they seem to be influenced by the 1985 series “Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam”. However, there are also hints of other popular anime from that era, such as “Starblazers”, “Robotech”, and “Voltron”.
Miss Mello did an impressive job of capturing most of the iconic features of Star Trek, barring one minor detail: the original Klingons didn’t sport the alien ridges on their foreheads. Nonetheless, it’s a small oversight that doesn’t detract from our enthusiasm for a genuine Star Trek anime series. It’s astonishing that one hasn’t been produced yet! We’d be thrilled to see an anime adaptation of the classic characters like Kirk and Spock. Additionally, we’d welcome a contemporary-looking anime film focusing on the Strange New Worlds crew. Given the potential interest in both concepts, perhaps there is indeed a sizable audience for them. For now, we can only enjoy Captain Kirk battling troublesome tribbles and envision what could have been.
