Vanessa Kirby Calls Robert Downey Jr. the “Godfather” of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

The film “Fantastic Four: First Footsteps” has just premiered in cinemas and it’s been receiving rave reviews from both critics and audiences. However, what’s really catching people’s attention isn’t just the epic space battles or beloved characters – it’s a pivotal scene during the end credits, masterfully directed by the Russo Brothers, which sets up the highly anticipated film “Avengers: Doomsday” that’s coming next.

In this particular moment, Robert Downey Jr. makes his debut as the villainous Doctor Doom within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Vanessa Kirby, the actress portraying Sue Storm, shared in Variety her experience of working on two films consecutively, noting that it’s been particularly challenging given her pregnancy. She humorously mentioned, “I’m horizontal today! … It’s been a while since I’ve known this,” referring to taking breaks amidst press engagements and filming. Although tired, Kirby expresses feelings of gratitude and inspiration.

Kirby also lauded Robert Downey Jr., referring to him as our “Godfather.” She stated, “He’s taken care of us.” Furthermore, she expressed that he’s performing “outstanding work,” not only in his portrayal of Doctor Doom on screen but also as a guiding figure off-screen.

The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026. This film has replaced the earlier planned “Kang Dynasty” storyline and will now center around Doctor Doom as the primary villain, with Downey Jr. taking on the role. This move represents a significant change in MCU acting and narrative direction.

In this movie, a large group of talented actors come together, including the Fantastic Four team members, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Ebon Moss Bachrach, and Vanessa Kirby. Previous Avengers cast members like Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, as well as former X-Men stars such as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, also appear in the film.

For Kirby and her fellow actors, the post-credits scene in “First Steps” doesn’t merely hint at something; it guarantees a more significant confrontation down the line. With Doctor Doom unveiled, the ground is laid for “Avengers: Doomsday” to reshape the risks for Phase Six of the MCU.
