Valve Announces New, More Powerful Steam Machine

Sony and Nintendo appeared to have the console market locked down, as Microsoft has largely stepped back from competing and is even allowing them access to games like Halo. It seemed like a competition between PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. However, Valve, the company behind Steam, might change things. They’ve just announced a new powerful piece of hardware (according to IGN). While the price isn’t known yet, we do know the new Steam Machine and Steam Controller will be six times more powerful than the current Steam Deck!

The new Steam Machine, coming in 2026, will have a lot of storage space. It will be available in two versions: one with 512GB and another with 2TB. You can buy it on its own or as a package with the Steam Controller. This updated version, a successor to the 2015 model, boasts impressive specs, including a custom AMD Zen 4 processor and RDNA3 graphics card, allowing for 4K gaming at a smooth 60 frames per second with FSR technology. Valve says it’s six times more powerful than the Steam Deck, featuring 16GB of DDR5 RAM and 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM.

The debate between playing games on consoles and PCs has always existed, and if this new Steam Machine truly combines the best of both worlds, it’s a very exciting development. As someone who usually plays on consoles, I’ve often been unable to play games that are only available on PC, and I’m sure PC gamers feel the same way about console exclusives. A powerful device that offers that kind of flexibility will likely appeal to players on both sides. However, its success will probably depend on how much it costs – and I suspect it won’t be cheap.

Valve’s Gabe Newell shared that they’re very pleased with how well the Steam Deck has been received. PC gamers have been requesting more ways to enjoy their Steam games, and Valve believes their experience with hardware and SteamOS – which powered the Steam Controller, Steam Machine, and Steam Link – allows them to deliver that.
