Trigger warning: The article contains mentions of death.
Val Kilmer experienced a remarkable career spanning many years until his sad passing at age 65 on April 1. Yet, it’s important to note that he faced some challenges as well, with one of the most notable incidents occurring during the filming of The Island of Dr. Moreau in 1996. This movie ultimately failed at the box office, and various theories circulated regarding its poor performance.
The film experienced numerous cast changes and intense conflicts involving Val Kilmer, his co-star Marlon Brando, as well as directors Richard Stanley and John Frankenheimer. Such issues, combined with unfortunate circumstances, ultimately led to the movie’s downfall.
In the production of the science fiction film based on H.G. Wells’ renowned novel, he was considered challenging to collaborate with because of his frequent outbursts on set. Reports suggest that Kilmer frequently declined to deliver lines as scripted and often disputed the instructions given by directors.
In a controversial turn of events, the actor from Batman Forever faced allegations of behaving aggressively towards the production team and being disrespectful. There was also a well-known dispute between him and both Stanley and Frankenheimer, his directors. Interestingly, Frankenheimer is said to have vowed never to work with Kilmer again.
According to reports, if I were making a movie called ‘The Life of Val Kilmer’ back then, I wouldn’t include that difficult person in it,” Frankenheimer is said to have commented. However, the Top Gun actor’s issues didn’t stop there. There were rumors of a rivalry with co-star Brando over who would be the first to leave their trailers.
Afterward, both men remained in their individual trailers for several hours instead of going for the scheduled shoot. It’s said that Brando allegedly told him, “The issue lies in mistaking the magnitude of your payment for the extent of your skill.
The well-known conflict between egos severely damaged Kilmer’s public image, leading to unfavorable portrayals in the media and labels such as “Crazy Kilmer.” It was speculated that the actor’s problematic behavior could be traced back to his divorce from Joanne Whalley, his co-star on Willow.
It is said that he found out about the divorce while shooting “The Island of Dr. Moreau” on television. In his autobiography, I’m Your Huckleberry, he admitted to being labeled as challenging to collaborate with.
