Val Kilmer Death: Learn About Top Gun Star’s Brave Journey With Throat Cancer Before Death

Known for iconic roles in films like Batman Forever, Top Gun, and others, Val Kilmer bravely disclosed his challenging battle against throat cancer prior to his passing at the age of 65.

Initially, Kilmer chose to conceal his battle with throat cancer when he was diagnosed in 2015. In a revealing interview from 2017, he discussed how his diagnosis significantly changed his outlook on life. He admitted to previously being overly focused on accolades, but clarified that this had not continued to be the case.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kilmer stated that he used to be overly serious and would feel disappointed when awards such as the Oscars or acknowledgment didn’t come his way. He credited his Christian Scientist beliefs for providing him with the strength he needed during his health challenges.

In recent years prior to his passing on April 1, 2025, the health problems of the deceased actor grew more evident. He faced challenges with the side effects of treatments, which included a progressive loss of his speaking abilities, according to Variety.

During an interview on Good Morning America in 2020, Kilmer was asked about what he missed most regarding his voice, which he had lost due to throat cancer. With his characteristic humorous flair, he humorously responded, “I miss that I had one!” and quipped, “And not laughing like a pirate.

Kilmer initially declined traditional treatments like surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, but was eventually persuaded by his children’s repeated requests. This course of treatment led to a tracheostomy tube being fitted for better oxygen flow, yet it drastically altered his voice, ultimately robbing him of the ability to speak.

In his film and autobiography called “I’m Your Huckleberry,” Kilmer expressed, “With speaking becoming harder, my desire to share my story has grown even stronger.

As stated by People, Kilmer commented, “I find it hard to talk without filling this throat gap. One must decide between breathing and eating,” alluding to his feeding tube. He further explained, “This barrier is quite noticeable to anyone who looks at me.

The documentary titled Val can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
