On April 1, 2025, it is sadly confirmed that Val Kilmer passed away at the age of 65. For years, he fought various health issues before his unfortunate demise. The exact cause of his death has now been disclosed.
According to a death certificate obtained by People magazine, it was reported that Kilmer passed away from pneumonia. His cause of death is also attributed to acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure, and squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue’s base.
As a devoted follower, I’d like to share that Mercedes Kilmer, his daughter, has shared with The New York Times that her father succumbed to pneumonia. She also opened up about his long-term battle against throat cancer, which began in 2014. After a period of recovery, the cancer left a profound impact on him.
In 2017, during a seldom granted interview, Kilmer openly acknowledged that cancer had significantly reshaped his life. Initially, he chose to keep his health private amidst speculations about his condition. However, he eventually decided to speak out in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, revealing how cancer affected both his physical and professional wellness.
In his 2020 memoir, titled “I’m Your Huckleberry,” the actor opened up extensively about his fight against cancer. He clarified a common misconception, stating, “There were rumors that I was in denial about my cancer. However, denial is an intriguing concept. I wasn’t denying that I had cancer in the past, but rather expressing that I no longer have it.
He confessed, “To tell the truth, accepting my initial diagnosis was extremely challenging. It felt unreal. I found it hard to accept that I was decaying, and I wasn’t prepared for the thought of dying.
Despite having a voice that could no longer be repaired, he continued to be involved in the film industry. He made a brief but heartfelt appearance in Top Gun: Maverick in 2021, reprising his role as Iceman. This emotional scene with lead actor Tom Cruise left him in tears.
As an ardent admirer, I’ve spent decades witnessing the extraordinary journey of Val Kilmer, marked by unforgettable portrayals in films like Top Gun, The Doors, Batman Forever, and many others. On the 7th of April, his life’s chapter closed with a poignant cremation ceremony.
