HBO is developing a television series based on V for Vendetta. James Gunn and Peter Safran, who lead DC Studios, will be executive producers on the show, as first reported by Variety.
HBO Developing New Live-Action DC Series
Pete Jackson will be the writer for the series. Ben Stephenson and Leanne Klein are executive producers, and Warner Bros. Television is producing it.
HBO and DC Studios aren’t commenting yet. Jackson’s reps didn’t respond.
This would be the latest big DC live-action series to come to HBO, joining hits like Peacemaker, The Penguin, and the soon-to-release Lanterns.
The upcoming V for Vendetta series will probably exist outside of James Gunn’s new DC Universe as a separate story. This news comes alongside the announcement that the original movie will be re-released in cinemas next year to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
The Classic Comic
The story of V for Vendetta started as a comic book series created by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. It was first published in 1982 in the British magazine Warrior, and later picked up by DC Comics in 1988.
This story takes place in a future Britain controlled by the oppressive Norsefire party. A mysterious rebel known only as V sparks an uprising against the government, and finds an unlikely ally in Evey Hammond, a young woman he saves from the authorities.
HBO’s DC Slate
As a huge cinema fan, I’m really excited about this potential series! It would add to HBO’s growing collection of DC shows and movies – they’ve already got Lanterns coming up, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart. We’re hoping to see that one in early 2026, and I can’t wait!
Who’s Writing It
Lewis Jackson wrote the Channel 4 series Somewhere Boy, which received a BAFTA nomination. He’s also the writer behind the upcoming Sky Atlantic series The Death of Bunny Munro, starring Matt Smith, and is represented by UTA.
The Film Legacy
Based on the graphic novel, the 2005 movie featured Hugo Weaving as V and Natalie Portman as Evey. The Wachowskis wrote the screenplay, and James McTeigue directed. The film earned over $130 million and quickly gained a dedicated following, becoming a beloved cult classic.
