The mighty US authorities, with their relentless zeal, now set their sights anew on poor Roman Storm, a man whose only crime is crafting lines of code that, alas, some deem sinful. A jury, that fickle creature, could not agree on the matter, and now the government, ever the persistent suitor, demands a second dance-this time with the same partner, but with a different tune.
“Conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money-mongering enterprise!” they cry, as if the very act of transmitting cash were a sin worse than betrayal. Yet the jury, that unreliable judge of human folly, left the other charges hanging like a half-finished joke. The prosecutors, undeterred, now beg the court to schedule a retrial, as if the law were a game of chess where the pieces can be moved at will.
“The Government intends to retry the defendant on Counts One and Three,” they write, as if the defendant were a villain in a tale of yore, not a coder who merely wrote words on a screen. The defendant, in his own words, laments that the state seeks to make the act of coding a crime, as if the mere act of typing were a heinous deed. “For writing open-source code! For a protocol I don’t control! For transactions I never touched!” he exclaims, his voice echoing through the halls of justice like a wail from a forgotten tavern.
And so, the defendant, now a hero in his own mind, raises funds with the fervor of a man battling a dragon. “Every dollar raised goes directly to keeping this fight alive,” he declares, as if the law were a beast that could be fed with coins. But what is this fight, if not a quixotic quest against the might of the state, where the odds are as stacked as a deck of cards in a crooked hand?
