Unveiling the Epic Superman Variant Covers: A Must-See for Fans!

This year, DC Comics is extending their “Summer of Superman” event by releasing a set of variant covers highlighting various artists’ renditions of the latest Superman, David Corenswet, in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman. Each artist has made notable contributions to Superman comics and brings their distinct style to this new on-screen Kal-El. The lineup includes Nicola Scott, Jim Lee, Dan Jurgens, Dan Mora, Jerry Ordway, Jorge Jiménez, Kevin Maguire, and Frank Quitely. Starting with Supergirl #1 on May 14, these special “DC Comics Superman Movie” covers will be published monthly until July. You can find them all below.

Action Comics #1087 Superman Movie Variant Cover by Dan Jurgens, publishing on June 11

Dan Jurgens, known for penning the forthcoming “Superman 2025 – Hero for All,” and famed for illustrating the classic “Death of Superman” tale from the ’90s, unveils our future Superman within his Fortress of Solitude on the cover.

Superman #27 Superman Movie Variant Cover by Jerry Ordway, publishing on June 25

Jerry Ordway played a significant role in reviving Superman’s popularity during the ’80s through his work on “Adventures of Superman”. His illustration for this cover depicts Superman and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) standing outside the Daily Planet building.

Justice League Unlimited #9 Superman Movie Variant Cover by Frank Quitely, publishing on July 23

A significant portion of James Gunn’s latest take on Superman is being influenced by Grant Morrison’s All-Star Superman, an adaptation beautifully illustrated by Frank Quitely. Given this, it seems appropriate that Quitely should reciprocate and offer his interpretation of Corenswet’s rendition of Kal-El.

Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1’s Superman Movie Variant Cover by Dan Mora, publishing on June 18

At present, Dan Mora’s depiction of Metropolis Marvel (Superman) is making waves in the comics of Superman and Justice League Unlimited, following his stint on World’s Finest. Notably, he portrays Superman alongside his trusty super-pet, Krypto.

Batman #161 Superman Movie Variant Cover by Jorge Jiménez, publishing on June 25

Jorge Jimenez has created countless Superman comic book tales, including a remarkable series called “Supersons,” which centers around the sons of Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne – Jonathan Kent and Damian Wayne. His cover design is a tribute to Frank Quitely’s artwork on the first issue of “All-Star Superman.

Superman Unlimited #1 Superman Movie Variant Cover by Jim Lee, publishing on May 21

As a dedicated movie reviewer, I’ve always been intrigued by the transformative power of creativity in comic book adaptations. DC Comics’ Chief Creative Officer, Jim Lee, masterfully redesigned Superman’s iconic costume for the New 52 era, and his vision has significantly impacted the Superman portrayed by James Gunn. Given Lee’s remarkable ability to breathe new life into these beloved characters, I eagerly anticipate his unique take on Superman and Krypto soaring through our screens.

Supergirl #1’s Superman Movie Variant Cover by Nicola Scott & Annette Kwok, publishing on May 14

Lastly, Nicola Scott has been making a significant impact on DC comics such as “Titans” and “Wonder Woman: Historia”, and she was even responsible for designing the Superman costume in the series “Earth-2”. This cover showcases her interpretation of the latest movie-inspired suit too.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming cover reveal of Kevin Maguire’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #41 Superman Movie Variant Edition, set to hit stores on July 16th. Don’t forget to preorder this special edition at your local comic book store!
