The Chainsaw Man series, both manga and anime, houses some exceptionally formidable characters, primarily because their adversaries – these ‘devils’ – are actual embodiments of human fear, making them incredibly potent. Given that these devils symbolize our deepest fears, they possess immense power. In fact, their power is so immense that Devil Hunters must draw strength from the devils themselves to vanquish them.
Throughout its entirety, Chainsaw Man has faced formidable foes, ranging from devils and humans imbued with devilish powers. Each adversary boasts unique abilities derived from their devilish influence. Therefore, let’s examine some of the most powerful antagonists in Chainsaw Man, sorted from least to greatest in power.
10. Bat Devil
In the narrative, one of the initial formidable challenges Denji faced was none other than the Bat Devil. This menacing creature made its appearance during a period when Denji was just beginning to understand Power’s abilities. The Bat Devil had taken hold of Power’s beloved cat as a means to restore its power, feeding on it. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Power, who cherished her cat above all else, selected Denji unwillingly as the price for freeing her pet.
As a die-hard movie fan, I’d put it this way: The Bat Demon is no ordinary creature – it’s a monstrous bat with an incredible arsenal of destructive power. It can go toe-to-toe with Denji and Power in a fight, but don’t let its intimidating presence fool you. This beast is not just big and fast; it can fly at breathtaking speeds and boasts a physique that could flatten entire city blocks. However, when faced against Denji’s Chainsaw Man form, it seemed to falter, and even the might of Aki’s Fox Devil was too much for it to handle.
9. Akane Sawatari

In the initial season of Chainsaw Man, Akane Sawatari stood as one of the formidable adversaries that Denji and his team encountered. Towards the end of the season, she played a role in thwarting several Devil Hunters, an act that also led to Himeno’s demise. Despite being a normal human, Akane holds a contract with the potent Snake Devil, making her a significant threat to the Devil Hunters during the Yakuza’s assault on them.
In the surprise attack by the Yakuza, Katana Man led the charge against Himeno, Denji, Aki, and Power. To unleash the complete might of the Ghost Devil against him, Himeno had to forfeit her own body. However, it was Akane who prevented Katana Man’s demise by employing the Snake Devil’s power, consuming and commandeering the Ghost Devil. Consequently, Akane’s abilities primarily revolve around controlling the Snake Devil.
8. Eternity Devil

Although the Eternity Devil didn’t possess destructive or lethal attack abilities, it proved to be a challenging adversary for Denji and his team when they were assigned to vanquish it. This was due to the fact that it materialized as a colossal structure, which ensnared Denji and several other Devil Hunters within an infinite time loop that came very close to driving everyone insane.
Regarding this matter, although the Eternity Devil isn’t the most devastating or powerful devil, it poses a significant challenge because of its capacity to establish a time loop. In fact, it was capable of concealing its true form whenever desired. However, the Eternity Devil met its match when Denji mercilessly tormented it by assuming his Chainsaw Man form, inflicting such pain that the devil eventually succumbed.
7. Katana Man

As a passionate movie buff diving into the world of Chainsaw Man, let me share my thoughts on Katana Man – a character who resonates with Denji in an intriguing way. You see, just like Denji, Katana Man merged with a devil’s power, the Katana Devil, to amplify his might and gain almost endless life. In essence, they both share this unique bond, where their powers are derived from a devil.
But that’s not all; Katana Man’s abilities mirror Denji in another striking aspect – multiple swords emerge from his very being, transforming into formidable weapons capable of overpowering Aki and his Curse Devil prowess. So, while they may be adversaries, there’s a sense of familiarity between them that makes Katana Man an interesting character to watch unfold in the series.
One key reason behind Katana Man’s immense power lies in his exceptional swordsmanship abilities, including the ability to execute a lightning-quick strike, so rapid that no opponent could possibly anticipate it. This makes him an expert swordsman, professionally skilled in his art. Interestingly, while Katana Man initially proved stronger than Chainsaw Man, Denji managed to outwit him and ultimately emerge victorious by employing deception as his tactical weapon.
6. Reze

The final episode of Chainsaw Man’s first season hinted at the upcoming story arc, featuring Reze, who will make her appearance in the second season of the anime. In the manga, Reze appears to be a charmingly cute young girl, but she is a formidable adversary and one of the strongest enemies within the entire narrative.
Indeed, Reze, in essence, represents the Soviet Union’s Powerful Demolition Spirit, dispatched to Japan for a specific task. This implies that she has the ability to generate massive explosions potent enough to demolish structures effortlessly. In the comic book, even the combined forces of Denji and the Shark Fiend were insufficient to subdue her, demonstrating her remarkable strength and power.
5. Hell Devil

The Monster Called “Hell Fiend” carries a chilling name that suits its fearsome nature perfectly, for it is indeed a terrifying embodiment of the dread associated with hell. Its form is colossal and featureless, save for an enormous gaping maw. Its body is ablaze with unending fire, living up to its title as the “Hell Fiend.” Additionally, this infernal creature is one of the most formidable adversaries in the entire Chainsaw Man narrative.
The Hell Devil gains its terrifying strength from its unique ability to create a portal in the sky at will. This power allows it to transport individuals straight to hell, earning it a place among the most formidable adversaries within the storyline. What adds to its chilling nature is that even minor amounts of blood can restore it to peak health if wounded during battle.
4. Santa Claus

Beware, the name might deceive you; Santa Claus isn’t the cheerful figure you may remember. Instead, her persona is far from friendly in the world of Chainsaw Man. In fact, she serves as the series’ main antagonist during the International Assassination arc. Contrary to popular belief, Santa Claus is a woman originating from Germany and remains an enigmatic character with extraordinary abilities.
The menacing aspect of Santa Claus lies in more than just being bound to the Devil of Hell. She possesses a unique skill: crafting dolls. With a mere touch, she can transform individuals into her puppets. Worse still, when these dolls come into contact with others, they can spread her control, effectively creating an army of minions. To add to this, Santa Claus can transfer her consciousness into another doll, granting her a near-immortal existence.
3. Gun Devil

Throughout the first season of Chainsaw Man, the Gun Devil emerges as a significant adversary in the narrative, yet he is merely one of the strongest devils that Denji and his companions must confront. The primary objective for Denji and Aki is to vanquish the Gun Devil, each with their own motives for wanting its demise. However, what makes the Gun Devil particularly challenging to defeat is its elusive nature, making it hard to track down.
The Gun Devil, symbolizing humanity’s dread of firearms, stands out among all devils in Chainsaw Man for its unprecedented devastation. In a matter of mere minutes, it can wipe out millions of lives. It masterfully manipulates lethal automatic rifles with the skill and finesse of a battle-hardened soldier. Furthermore, its extraordinary speed makes it incredibly hard to catch, adding to its terrifying nature. This is why the Gun Devil ranks as one of the most fearsome adversaries throughout the narrative.
2. Makima (Control Devil)

Indeed, Makima is portrayed as a foe within the Chainsaw Man narrative, masking herself as a human but in reality, she’s the Control Devil. Unlike the Gun Devil, she doesn’t exhibit overt destructive powers, but her supernatural abilities to manipulate others and control their actions make her one of the most formidable antagonists in the story. Her character in Chainsaw Man stirs strong reactions, making her a divisive yet esteemed villain.
As the Commanding Devil, Makima wields an extraordinary ability to command those weaker than herself. Essentially, she can manipulate individuals into following her commands. This is why Makima can get some of the Devil Hunters to do her bidding, leaving people like Himeno questioning Aki’s attraction towards her. In season 1, we witnessed that she possesses the power to eliminate people from a distance, provided she has an offering for sacrifice on hand.
1. Darkness Devil

Throughout the series, the Control Devil plays a significant role as one of the main characters, but it’s widely agreed that the Darkness Devil is not only the strongest adversary for Chainsaw Man, but also the most terrifying character due to its grotesque form made from human remains. As its name implies, the Darkness Devil embodies humanity’s fear of darkness, representing the deepest, darkest fears that reside within us all.
Regarding its strength, the Darkness Devil stands out as a devil that strikes terror into even seasoned Devil Hunters due to abilities that surpass those of other devils. Its ability to make people bleed just by gazing at them demonstrates the immense power it wields. Furthermore, it can employ chants capable of disintegrating a person in a gruesome manner. However, when armed with the Black Sword, the Darkness Devil transforms into an entirely new adversary that can obliterate foes in less than a second.
