Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, often simply referred to as Hell’s Paradise, is a captivating manga series penned by Yūji Kaku, who was responsible for both the writing and illustrations. The manga made its debut on January 22, 2018, and was distributed free of charge through the Shōnen Jump+ app and website. Shūeisha later compiled the chapters into thirteen tankōbon volumes. Thanks to a license from VIZ Media, Hell’s Paradise is now available in English in North America. This article aims to shed some light on the unforgettable characters that populate this series.

This write-up will provide you with a top ten rundown of the strongest characters from Hell’s Paradise, showcased across both the manga and anime versions. The ranking will be based on their power levels, starting with the tenth most powerful and working our way up to the number one spot. Not only will we present the characters, but we’ll also give you insight into each one so you can understand their importance in the storyline and why they are considered so strong.

10. Tamiya Gantetsusai

In the narrative, Tamiya Gantetsusai, a warrior renowned for both his boastful nature and exceptional swordsmanship, was famously called the “Blade Dragon” and the “Eight Provinces Unsurpassed.” After he beheaded a daimyo’s property, he faced a death sentence. To evade execution, he embarked on a mission to Kotaku in search of the Elixir of Life. His elemental attribute is Fire.

Tamiya Gantetsusai, a show-off and talented warrior, was known as a master swordsman, with nicknames like “Blade Dragon” and “Eight Provinces Unmatched.” He lost his life due to beheading a daimyo’s property, but avoided execution by accepting a quest for the Elixir of Life in Kotaku. His power is Fire-based.

Gantetsusai is an accomplished swordsman with a reputation across Japan, having been hired by a daimyo who admired him. He showcased his exceptional abilities when he survived a mass execution of convicts, even with his hands bound. This earned him a place in the shogun’s quest to discover the Elixir of Life. Upon arriving at Kotaku, Rien observed that Gantetsusai’s ability to slay a Mōnshin was highly unusual for a human. He endured the raid on Hōrai and ultimately killed Tao Fa, a powerful Sennin, and helped bring down the combined Kishikai of Ju Fa and Tao Fa.

9. Shion

Previously identified as Yamada Asaemon Shion, Shion was a formidable member of the Yamada clan’s Asaemon division, renowned for his great power. He agreed to undertake the Kotaku mission to secure the Elixir of Life, serving as a watch over the villain Akaginu. Among the series’ characters, he is one of the most proficient and adored. His elemental affinity lies within Wood.

Shion’s prowess and talents are incredibly vast, earning him a distinguished reputation among the Yamada clan as one of their top warriors. He boasts exceptional speed and agility, coupled with immense strength and proficiency in handling weapons. Moreover, he is adept at Tao and possesses an exceptionally sharp mind, keen intuition, strategic acumen, and impressive analytical skills that have contributed significantly to his success and survival on the mission. The pinnacle of his powers was evident in his triumph over Mu Dan.

8. Yuzuriha

Yuzuriha, a renowned kunoichi, was extraordinarily proficient in her craft and ranked among the greatest of her era. However, she carries a dark past as a death row criminal. In an attempt to clear her name, she agreed to journey to Kotaku in search of the Elixir of Life, hoping it would earn her a royal pardon for her crimes. Her unique affinity lies with Earth.

Because of her criminal background and exceptional skills as a kunoichi, Yuzuriha was deemed too dangerous to remain alive and was consequently given a death sentence. Her abilities were so remarkable that she single-handedly attacked Sagiwa Castle, managing to eliminate every retainer within it. She showed incredible resilience by enduring a massacre among death row inmates with her hands bound. It’s worth noting that Yuzuriha was the sole criminal on the journey to Kotaku who possessed knowledge of the vital energy known as Tao, or “ki,” and could harness it intentionally.

7. Yamada Asaemon Jikka

In a different phrasing: Jikka belongs to the Yamada clan’s powerful branch known as Asaemon, and took part in an expedition to acquire the Elixir of Life from Kotaku. He kept tabs on the criminal Hōrubō, who was eventually slain by Chōbei. Afterward, he was permitted to return to the mainland, but later returned to the island to continue his pursuit of the Elixir. His element is Earth.

In essence, Jikka, who holds the third position among the Asaemons, is undeniably gifted, as the Yamada clan regards him as one of its strongest members. He’s the unique individual in history to have escaped Kotaku alive without facing any perils, a remarkable achievement that even other Asaemons haven’t managed. After witnessing Jikka effortlessly overcome the Zhu Jin-fused Banko, Gantetsusai decided that Jikka had the abilities required to earn the title of God Slayer.

6. Zhu Jin

In the realm of Kotaku’s captivating narrative, I find myself drawn to another formidable adversary – Zhu Jin, alias Tathātā Yuanjun. As a prominent antagonist, he stands tall among Lord Tensen’s formidable ranks, his elemental prowess rooted in the fluidity of Water.

Much like Ju Fa, Zhu Jin transcends traditional gender norms, embodying both male and female energies. In our initial encounter with him, it was evident that he wielded a power far beyond Shion’s capabilities, even though he wasn’t alone in the battlefield. His strength is colossal, and his command over his Tao is so profound that it nearly cost Gabimaru his life during their fierce skirmish.

To add to his formidable reputation, Zhu Jin holds a high-ranking position as a commander within Lord Tensen’s ranks. His story is one I eagerly anticipate unfolding further in this captivating series.

5. Ju Fa

In the world of “Hell’s Paradise,” Ju Fa serves as one of the primary adversaries. He’s not just powerful within Lord Tensen, also recognized as the Great Emperor Akshobhya, but also holds a significant position. Despite identifying as male, Ju Fa is fluid in his gender expression. His elemental power lies in Fire. Within the ranks, he commands the Kotaku, which includes the Dōshi, Mōnshin, and Sōshin. His combat skills are exceptional, making him physically strong, a quality that allowed him to effortlessly overpower both Aza brothers during their battle.

4. Aza Chōbei

In my perspective as a film critic, “Aza Chōbei: King of Bandits” is a gripping tale that introduces us to an infamous outlaw, the notorious ‘King of Bandits.’ With a criminal record longer than most, he found himself selected for a peculiar mission – a journey to the enigmatic realm of Hell’s Paradise, in search of the Elixir of Life. This elusive potion would grant him a royal pardon and a chance to start anew. Accompanying him on this perilous quest was his brother, Aza Tōma, who served as his watchdog, ensuring that even the notorious King of Bandits couldn’t escape the long arm of justice. As for Aza Chōbei, his elemental attribute was Metal – a testament to his unyielding determination and resilience in the face of adversity.

Chobei is a formidable criminal with influence over an entire town of outlaws, causing fear in Iyo. It’s rumored that he could have faced as many as one hundred death sentences due to his long history of crime. One of the Doshi was astonished by his abilities and realized that he had the right skills for Tao, a task. The fact that Chobei managed to overpower the Doshi despite the latter’s extensive knowledge of Tao and training under Lord Tensen shows just how capable he truly is.

3. Shugen

In the series, Yamada Asaemon Shugen serves as a secondary adversary, but he’s an exceptionally potent character. He was a highly skilled ninja and assassin, loyal to the Shogun, and led the second squad dispatched to secure the Elixir of Life. However, when Shugen observes that the initial team members have been slain, he instructs his troops to annihilate anyone and anything in their path.

Among his peers, Shugen was considered the strongest member of the Yamada clan, known for his exceptional skill with the Asaemon sword. Even Doshi, a disciple of Lord Tensen renowned for mastering Tao more than any other human, was defeated by him. Moreover, despite facing Gantetsusai – a highly respected and powerful swordsman – Shugen came close to defeating him. Ultimately, Shugen survived experiences as harrowing as those endured by Kotaku over a thousand years, making it out alive among an extremely small number of people who have done so, having encountered the monstrous creatures and followers of Lord Tensen.

2. Gabimaru

In the world of “Hell’s Paradise,” Gabimaru takes center stage as our main character. Born into a ruthless culture, he stands out as the most formidable ninja from Iwagakure. Due to his seemingly emotionless nature, he is known as “Gabimaru the Empty.” His affection for his wife, the village chief’s daughter, is unique, as she treats him with a level of kindness not typically shown to others. In an attempt to lead a normal life alongside her, he planned to cut ties with his community; however, he was wrongfully accused and captured by his own allies. His affinity lies in the realm of Fire.

The exceptional Shinobi prodigy Gabimaru is widely considered too perilous to confront due to his formidable abilities. As a child, Gabimaru possessed an innate talent that allowed him to survive Iwagakure’s grueling training programs alongside only a select few. His ruthless tendency towards eliminating targets has led society to view him as a terrifying beast. Despite this reputation, Gabimaru has shown he can single-handedly vanquish his enemies, even when they outnumber him. After reaching Kotaku, Gabimaru became one of the rare individuals in millennia to conquer the island’s trials, reach Hrai – the former residence of Lord Tensen – and escape.

1. Rien

In the “Hell’s Paradise” manga, Rien stands out as the primary antagonist and undoubtedly the most powerful character. She was not just any Sennin but a Tensen-class one, holding simultaneous roles as Kotaku’s ruler, creator of the Tensens, and leader of Lord Tensen. Her unique experiments with Tao aimed at resurrecting her deceased husband, Jofuku, were unprecedented and came at the cost of potentially extinguishing life across Japan. Her inherent power was tied to the Earth element.

As a Tensen named Rien, she boasted extraordinary powers surpassing those of her subordinate Sennin and outmatching any mortal. Furthermore, among all the other Tensens under her command, Rien was by far the most potent. Thus, it can be argued that Rien poses the greatest threat in the “Jigokuraku” manga. Jikka came to the realization that there would be no feasible way to vanquish Rien, even if he and the nine human survivors joined forces with him to battle her 10,000 times, utilizing his supposedly infallible institution.
