Until Dawn Movie Snubs Original Game Writers: Credits Controversy Explodes

The film adaptation of “Until Dawn” was released on April 25th, however it has faced more than just mixed reviews; a former narrative director from Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) recently posted on LinkedIn that the movie’s credits failed to acknowledge the writers and developers who worked on the original video game.

Kim MacAskill, a former employee at Sony, expressed her thoughts in a post. She mentioned that during her tenure as a director at Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation Narrative, she was informed that the intellectual property she personally developed would never be attributed to her because of her salary-based position (meaning no royalties, no rights to decision-making, no ownership, and no recognition). Now, she is grappling with the apparent favoritism shown towards Neil Druckmann within your company as compared to herself.

MacAskill noted that while both the director and the writers of the movie were given credit, the creators of the original game were not. She expressed her thoughts, “It’s striking to me that in this discussion about a game you’re clearly fond of and call ‘iconic’, you didn’t take a moment to acknowledge the leading developers who created it. Instead, you simply referred to it as ‘based on the Sony game’.

In the initial version of “Until Dawn,” the script was penned by Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick. The duo, Will Byles and Nik Bowen, oversaw its direction, while Pete Samuels handled production. Interestingly, none of these individuals were acknowledged in the film’s credits, nor were many other dedicated team members who contributed significantly to the game’s development.

MacAskill stated, “After spending years tirelessly creating something remarkable, their names should be widely recognized… yet they receive no recognition, no gratitude, and no acclaim.

In my own words, I’d rephrase it as: “I’m asking, why should those who create intellectual property continue to work for us when even the film and TV industry, which can be quite grotesque at its best, still feels the need to emphasize the significance of giving credit?

Additionally, MacAskill launched a request for action, urging Sony to rectify the credits and acknowledge the initial game creators. Currently, this appeal boasts 89 supporters.
