Leading a life as a superhero is incredibly tough and demanding. It’s almost equivalent to being a mother, wouldn’t you agree? Now, imagine if you had to fulfill both roles! That’s exactly what these extraordinary superheroes from this compilation have accomplished. Some took on the supermom role wholeheartedly, while others relinquished it, and some never desired it initially.
Without a doubt, each and every mother is extraordinary, and it’s fascinating to note that many renowned superheroes share this unique role as mothers. Now, let me present to you an exceptional list, carefully curated and ranked, showcasing the greatest superhero moms from both Marvel and DC universes. Have a wonderful time delving into their extraordinary stories!
15. Carol Danvers
Did you realize that at some point in her life, Carol Danvers became a mother? This is not widely known due to the somewhat uncomfortable nature of the storyline. After this, Marvel opted to ignore the event as if it had never taken place, but rest assured, we are aware of it. Yes, we are.
During issues #197-200 of Avengers, a story unfolded in which Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) experienced a puzzling pregnancy and gave birth within mere weeks or even days. Remarkably, the newborn grew at an astonishing rate. It was later revealed that this rapid growth was due to the baby being an ancient alien who had forcibly impregnated Carol Danvers in order to be reborn.
In another formulation: He triumphed yet faced defeat and faded into obscurity, but the narrative lives on in history, famously referred to as “The Fall of Ms. Marvel.” Regardless of its nature, Carol Danvers is a mother figure, even though she’s not biologically one. Yet, she’s an extraordinary, power-packed character that it would be foolish to exclude from any list.
14. Tigra

Initially, Greer Nelson, who is also known as Tigra, was just a common street-level crime fighter, famously referred to as ‘The Cat.’ But over time, she encountered an enigmatic and powerful group called the Cat People. They transformed her into Tigra, a formidable being with human and cat traits.
At some point, Tigra believed she was having a romantic relationship with Hank Pym, which led to pregnancy. However, it was later revealed that the one who fathered her child was actually a Skrull disguised as Hank Pym. The result of this unusual situation was William, a cat-human boy who was born healthy and exhibited abilities similar to his mother. Remarkably, he grew both physically and mentally at an accelerated pace compared to a typical child.
Tigra chose not to leave him, but worried that her way of life could put William at risk, so she entrusted the care of the baby to the people known as Cat Folk.
13. Donna Troy

Originally known as Wonder Girl, Donna Troy is a significant and powerful character hailing from the DC Comics universe, and one of the original founding members of the widely acclaimed Teen Titans. Later in life, she married a man named Terry Long, who already had a daughter, Jennifer, from a previous relationship. Thus, Donna stepped into the role of stepmother for Jennifer. Over time, Donna and Terry welcomed another child, Robert, into their family.
Unfortunately, it was then that events took a turn for the worse – much like every member of the Teen Titans seemed to experience. Donna and Terry found themselves in a bitter argument, leading to a divorce. Given Donna’s risky lifestyle, Terry was granted full custody over their kids. Heartbreakingly, Terry suffered a severe car accident, resulting in his untimely death, as well as the loss of both their children.
Although Donna didn’t have much time as a mother, she proved to be an excellent one regardless. It was both startling and sad to come across the comic strip where these events unfolded.
12. Mystique

In this list showcasing outstanding superhero moms, I felt compelled to include Mystique, despite her less-than-perfect parenting skills and the fact that she often operates on the villainous side of things within the X-Men universe. However, it’s important to remember that she does have children and plays a significant role in the team.
In another version of events: Mystique is the birth-mother of Nightcrawler, whom she left at birth only to encounter him later on a shared team. She also surrendered her son Graydon Creed once she discovered he wasn’t a mutant. However, she adopted Rogue and showed great affection towards her, consistently making decisions that she felt were in Rogue’s best interest, rather than her own.
11. Power Girl

Indeed, Power Girl certainly stands out in many ways, and that includes her unique circumstances as a mother. Despite the unusual nature of balancing motherhood with her extraordinary powers, Power Girl’s unwavering morals and incredible strength more than warrant her inclusion on this list.
As a die-hard movie buff, I’ve always been captivated by Power Girl’s origin story. Typically, it’s woven around her hailing from Krypton and arriving on Earth in a spacecraft, much like Superman. But there was this intriguing twist post-Crisis on Infinite Earths when the writers rewrote her history. Instead of being a Kryptonian, Kara Zor-El was said to be Atlantean! Specifically, she was depicted as the granddaughter of Arion, an immensely powerful Atlantean sorcerer.
As a movie critic, I’d put it this way: In an unusual twist, it was my own grandfather who miraculously brought about my pregnancy, resulting in the birth of Equinox – a child born from my union with Kara. This makes Arion both Equinox’s father and great-grandfather. Given the complexity of this narrative thread, it’s no wonder that DC opted to let this specific storyline fade into obscurity.
10. Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is a multifaceted character who isn’t typically thought of as maternal. She carries heavy baggage from past traumas and struggles with alcohol problems, yet she remains one of the most captivating Marvel characters based in New York.
Following his transformation into a superhero and his work as a private investigator, Jones encountered Luke Cage. Romantically involved, they went on to have a child together. Unlike most other entries in this list, their daughter brought about a positive change in Jessica. She became more nurturing and took fewer risks to ensure her daughter’s wellbeing.
Dani’s name originates from Daniel Rand, also known as the Iron Fist. Growing up amidst superheroes, it’s expected that she will accomplish remarkable feats once she matures.
9. Clea

It’s worth noting that Clea is actually Stephen Strange’s partner or ex-partner, depending on the continuity you’re referring to. She holds a unique position, being the niece of Dormammu, the sovereign of the Dark Dimension, and playing the role of the primary antagonist in the initial Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film featuring Doctor Strange. However, in the comics, their relationship evolves further, with them getting married and Clea eventually assuming the rule over the Dark Dimension.
Besides this, it’s worth mentioning that Clea delivered Sofia Strange, an enchanting baby girl, who made her debut exclusively in Epic Anthology #1 – a series that failed to gain traction. Currently residing in New Orleans, Sofia Strange is secretly honing her skills as a sorceress while avoiding detection by Dormammu on Earth.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the prospect of Charlize Theron’s character Clea potentially deepening her connection with Doctor Strange in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Could we be witnessing the sprouting of a romantic tale between Stephen and Clea? Who knows? Perhaps, we might even see MCU Strange embracing fatherhood in the near future.
8. Batwoman

In the primary DC universe, Kate Kane is a cousin of Batman and assists him in combating urban criminality outside Gotham City. Interestingly, when she debuted in the comics, even within the main storyline, she was initially portrayed as a wealthy socialite using crime-fighting to lure Batman romantically. However, her plan didn’t succeed, but a Batwoman from an alternate reality had better luck.
On Planet 154, Batman and Batwoman were married and welcomed their son, Bruce Wayne Jr. As he matured, he embarked on missions as Robin, eventually taking over his father’s mantle as Batman Jr. Alongside him was Clark Kent Jr., who adopted the role of Superman Jr. Together, they formed a dynamic duo known as the Super Sons, all under the watchful and proud gaze of Kate Kane, their loving mother.
7. Catwoman

In an alternate universe, Batwoman was a mother. But it’s Catwoman, specifically, who is portrayed as a mom in the primary DC universe. This storyline began in Catwoman #53 when Selina found herself pregnant following a brief romantic encounter with Slam Bradley Jr.
Following her delivery, Catwoman experimented with motherhood, yet the blend of her profession and parenthood proved difficult, to understate it, especially considering its perilous nature. Consequently, a saddened Kyle handed over the baby and contacted Bruce Wayne in hopes that he could facilitate Helena, their baby girl, for adoption.
In a poignant, sorrowful turn of events for Catwoman, it seemed as though Helena found herself in a caring household, although subsequent tales did not reveal more about her post-19-issue series.
6. Wonder Woman

It’s worth noting that the initial Wonder Woman of Earth-Two is not only one of the strongest heroes on our planet but also a mother! The early tales depict Wonder Woman marrying Steve Trevor, who was played by Chris Pine in the DCEU version of Wonder Woman. Interestingly, his mother was actually a hero and held significant importance among the Amazons.
Wonder Woman, also known as Diana Prince, was given her name. Conversely, Steve and Diana had a child they named after Hippolyta, Wonder Woman’s mom. Later, she became a hero and joined Infinity Inc., taking on the name Fury (not to be confused with Nick Fury; she was simply called Fury).
It’s a three generations-worth of superhero moms, as Fury also had a child later in the comics.
5. Scarlet Witch

While Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch, might not be traditionally considered an exceptional mother, she demonstrated unwavering devotion to her role as a parent and possesses immense power that places her among the most significant characters on this particular ranking, thus earning her a prominent position.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda’s children, Tommy and Billy, were synthetically brought into being by manipulating reality. Their erasure from existence triggered a dangerous descent into madness within Wanda, which posed a significant risk not only to the world but also potentially the entire universe.
Ultimately, comic books brought Tommy and Billy back to life, transforming them into their own young superheroes. This left Wanda, their mother, beaming with pride as a powerful witch.
4. Freyja

In the Marvel Comics Universe, Freyja/Frigga is known primarily as Thor’s mother in the MCU. Yet, she holds a much grander role in the comics. Freyja was incredibly powerful and, surprisingly, she was Thor’s stepmother rather than his biological one. Despite this, she cared deeply for both Thor and Loki, treating them as if they were her own offspring. Her children included Baldur, Hermod, Tyr, and two daughters named Laussa and Angela.
Freyja was compassionate, nurturing, insightful, and strong, constantly safeguarding her offspring and pointing them towards the correct course. In addition, she served as a maternal figure to Jane Foster when she acquired Mjolnir and transformed into Mighty Thor. Freyja stands out among superhero mothers, enhancing the significance of her title All-Mother, alongside Odin, the All-Father, making it even more impressive.
3. Aunt May

It’s not essential to be biologically related or possess extraordinary abilities to excel as a nurturing figure or hero. Aunt May, who became Peter Parker’s adoptive mother throughout his life, demonstrated this beautifully. She provided for him, raised him as her own son, and molded him into the intelligent, kind-hearted, compassionate, generous man we all cherish and admire.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at Aunt May, who may not have biologically-linked offspring, yet she embodies the essence of motherhood perfectly. Her teachings on shaping a child into a kind, well-mannered individual, filled with love, are unparalleled. Even the younger, trendier rendition of Aunt May in the Marvel Cinematic Universe left an indelible impression on me, and it’s hard not to get emotional when… You know the drill.
2. Sue Storm

Indeed, any ranking of exceptional superhero mothers would undeniably overlook Sue Storm, also known as the Invisible Woman. Known for their close-knit dynamics, the Fantastic Four are often referred to as Marvel’s very own family. The bond between Sue and Reed Richards, her partner, only serves to strengthen this notion even further.
The couple, comprising Sue and Reed, were blessed with two extraordinary children. Their eldest son, Franklin Richards, is widely recognized as one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe. As for their daughter, it was whispered that her intelligence surpassed even her genius father by the time she turned three – Reed being hailed as the smartest man on Earth.
Talk about supermoms! She’d be number one on my list, but I just couldn’t resist… I couldn’t.
1. Loki

Lo and behold! It’s surprising to disclose, but our cherished trickster, Loki, finds himself in the unique role of a parent! However, let me clarify, he didn’t give birth to a child, nor did he become a mother. Instead, there was an intriguing incident involving Loki and a Frost Giant named Hrimthur, who was mounted on a massive steed.
In order to collect his winnings, Loki needed to separate Hrimthur from his duties, so he transformed himself into an enchantingly beautiful mare. This seduced Hrimthur’s stallion, causing the stallion to move away from the mare (or him) and mount it instead.
Well, I must confess, Loki ended up winning the wager, leading to an unexpected twist: pregnancy. Yes, you heard it right! After a while, Loki, in an unusual turn of events, gave birth to none other than Sleipner, the magnificent eight-legged steed. This equine prodigy was renowned for his unimaginable power and astonishing speed, making him Odin’s most prized mount. It certainly adds a new dimension to the mythology, doesn’t it?
Indeed, it’s fascinating trivia that Loki, the character, is said to be the mother of Odin’s eight-legged steed. This factoid takes the cake for being unusual, so I simply had to rank it as top priority – Loki is known as a mare to Odin’s horse!
