In the action RPG titled “Avowed” by Obsidian Entertainment, players are treated to an array of options when it comes to tackling combat situations and character builds. Despite having a relatively small number of classes in the game, there’s a wealth of intricacy within the three class skill trees, allowing for diverse customization possibilities.
In the game Avowed, classes are organized into three unique skill sets, catering to a Fighter, Ranger, or Wizard playstyle. While you can focus on mastering one of these main class paths in Avowed, it’s also straightforward to combine multiple classes, allowing you to design a character with a blend of skills from all three class skill trees.
Fighter
The Fighter Skill Line emphasizes a strong offensive approach in combat, offering skills that excel in close-quarter situations and are ideally suited for martial gameplay styles. As you advance as a Fighter, Avowed players will unlock a diverse array of melee weapon abilities, enhancements to Stamina and mobility, and boosts to your defensive Block.
Best Fighter Class Starting Background
To become a Fighter, select the “War Hero” backstory during character creation. This option boosts your Might and Resolve to 3, which are crucial for dealing damage and managing your Stamina effectively.
All Fighter Skills
Req. Level | Fighter Class Skills | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Charge | Armored Grace | Shield Bash | Brawn | Toughness |
5 | Barbaric Shout | Bleeding Cuts | Built to Destroy | Devastating Criticals | Constant Recovery |
10 | Power Jump | Unbreakable | Stunning Blows | Iron Fists | – |
15 | Into the Fray | Reflect | Retribution | – | – |
20 | Clear Out | Inspiring Triumph | – | – | – |
Ranger
The Ranger’s skill progression is centered around “nimbleness and precision,” offering abilities that perform effectively for mid-to-long-range assaults as well as swift close combat strategies. Unlike the robust and powerful Fighter class, players opting for the Ranger will appreciate its agility, characterized by a quicker gameplay style that caters to those who enjoy strategically engaging and disengaging from melee combat.
As an enthusiast, I can absolutely delve deep into the strategy of crafting a character that solely relies on ranged combat, steering clear of melee engagements entirely. To achieve this, consider wielding a Bow for swift, nimble strikes, and an Arbalest for powerful, heavy shots.
Best Ranger Class Starting Background
To become a Ranger, opt for the “Advanced Explorer” backstory during character setup. This enhancement boosts your Perception to 3, while simultaneously increasing both your Constitution and Dexterity to 2. Keep in mind, though, that you won’t begin with a Bow pre-equipped.
All Ranger Skills
Req. Level | Ranger Class Skills | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Tanglefoot | Finesse | Parry | Marksmanship | Evasive |
5 | Shadowing Beyond | Piercing Thrusts | Steady Aim | Survivalist | Scavenger |
10 | Power Slide | Quick Switch | Arrow Deflection | – | – |
15 | Bear Ally | Critical Strike | Sniper | – | – |
20 | Flurry of Blows | Staggering Shot | – | – | – |
Wizard
The skill tree for the Wizard primarily concentrates on enhancing spellcasting, offering an expansive collection of offensive spells, protective enchantments, elemental influences, and techniques to boost your proficiency in the mystical arts through enhancements to your Wand and Grimoire.
In the game “Avowed”, each Grimoire provides a set of spells that can be cast when equipped. However, if you acquire a spell through the Wizard skill tree, you can cast it without needing the specific Grimoire. When you cast a spell from a Grimoire that you’ve learned, it will be enhanced and cast at a level higher than usual.
Grimoire Mastery
To progress further in the Wizard tree and unlock additional spells, you should improve your Grimoire Mastery passive. As you level up, you’ll gain access to some spells and effects, however, the skills on the right side of the ability tree at each rank will remain locked until you enhance your Grimoire Mastery.
Additionally, you will not be able to use higher-level Grimoires if you don’t increase this stat.
Best Wizard Class Starting Background
To create your character as a Wizard, select the “Court Sorcerer” backstory during character setup. This decision boosts your Perception and Intelligence to 3, which are crucial for enhancing a spellcaster’s damage output and the effective range of their spells. However, you won’t start with a Grimoire or Wand, but you should discover one in the tutorial zone fairly quickly.
All Wizard Grimoire Mastery Spells

1 | N / A | Chill Blades | Fan of Flames | Jolting Touch | Corrosive Siphon | Parasitic Staff | Arcane Veil |

10 | Rank 2 | Blast of Frost | Ring of Fire | Returning Storm | Spirit Lance | Missile Salvo | – |

20 | Rank 4 | Meteor Shower | Arcane Seal | – | – | – | – |

Multiclassing In Avowed

Due to the non-exclusive nature of the skill trees in Avowed classes, it’s quite straightforward to combine or multiclass. The choice of your starting background will not limit the skills you can acquire from each tree.
In the game Avowed, rather than strictly focusing on just melee, ranged, or magic by specializing in a single class tree, it’s advantageous to explore the benefits of multiclassing for several reasons.
- Pure Wizards tend to be very squishy if enemies like to stay close or you can’t fire off some defensive spells. But if you multiclass into the Fighter ability tree for more Heavy Armor penalty reduction, you’ll be able to equip significantly more defensive gear without as many stat penalties.
- A pure Ranger can benefit greatly from a few powerful ranged Crowd Control spells, while a pure Fighter can benefit from buffs and AoE damage only possible with Wizard abilities.
- Some unique builds only really work if you split up ability points between trees, like a Spellblade that uses a mix of Fighter and Wizard skills.
You don’t need any specific prerequisites (except for Grimoire Mastery if you’re going higher with the Wizard class) when it comes to multiclassing, so feel free to experiment! If you find yourself overly specialized in one area and wish to switch things up, or if your multiclass build isn’t panning out as planned, you can always respec each ability tree by spending some Gold.
