The latest offering from Obsidian Entertainment, which is now under Microsoft’s ownership, is “Avowed.” Known for hits like “Fallout: New Vegas” and “The Outer Worlds,” this first-person fantasy RPG was developed over a span of about six years before its release earlier this month. Originally unveiled in 2020, “Avowed” underwent numerous reboots during its development process. Initially conceptualized as an open-world multiplayer game similar to “Skyrim,” it eventually transformed into the single-player RPG with a hub structure that it is today.
Overall, the game Avowed is generally user-friendly for those new to the RPG genre, offering extensive tutorials and in-game instructions, as well as balanced combat mechanics neither overly complex nor excessively straightforward. This also applies to its dialogue interactions and choice and consequence systems. However, certain aspects of the game might pose challenges for players. For example, tracking down all the collectibles scattered across the Living Lands can be quite challenging. Luckily, Avowed includes a useful feature that can simplify obtaining some of these collectibles, although it seems to be hidden within the game’s settings menu.
Totem Collecting in Avowed Can Become a Lot Easier By Enabling One Setting
God Totem Fragments Are One of the Major Types of Collectibles in Avowed
Collectibles play a significant role in both open-world games and those with hubs, and Avowed certainly won’t disappoint in this regard. In Obsidian’s upcoming fantasy RPG, you’ll encounter various types of collectibles throughout your journey. Some are everyday items like keys, amulets, or trinkets, while others stand out, such as the Ancient Memories, which grant players a lasting improvement to one of their primary attributes upon acquisition.
In the game “Avowed”, it might be particularly valuable to gather the scattered God Totem fragments. For those unfamiliar with the lore of “Avowed”, these God Totems are sacred artifacts crafted in reverence to a specific deity within the game’s pantheon. Each region in the game has only one such God Totem, but they were shattered into pieces and scattered across the Living Lands. Your task as a player is to locate and reunite these fragments.
Each God Totem piece confers a passive benefit on the player and their allies, with additional benefits unlocking as more pieces for a specific totem are amassed. The game doesn’t explicitly show where these God Totem pieces can be found, but it does offer hints in the form of riddles written on scraps of paper sold by vendors in major areas. If players manage to solve these riddles, they can determine the location of each piece. However, the riddles can sometimes be so cryptic that their true meaning is difficult to discern.
Avowed’s In-Game Compass Can Direct Players to the Nearest God Totem Fragment
For gamers who prefer not to spend too much time solving puzzles to find collectibles, there’s an easier solution at hand. By navigating to the settings menu within Avowed, choosing the UI tab and then scrolling down to the bottom of the screen, you will discover an option named “Compass – God Shrine Totem Pieces.” Enabling this setting allows your in-game compass at the top of the screen to guide you towards nearby God Totem fragments. This feature won’t give you an exact location for these collectibles, but it certainly makes the search easier.
Interestingly, the “Compass – God Shrine Totem Pieces” function is turned off by default, despite most other compass settings being active. It seems that Obsidian may have decided to make finding the God Totem fragments a bit more challenging in the game, which is why they don’t explicitly explain this feature in the in-game tutorials for Avowed. However, it’s wonderful that this feature was included at all because it means players can spend less time figuring out riddles and locating these collectibles in Avowed, making their gaming experience more enjoyable.
