Universal Pulls ‘M3GAN’ Spinoff From Release Schedule – Here’s Why

Universal Pictures has pulled its sci-fi thriller, Soulm8te, from its scheduled release on January 9th, according to insiders.

Kate Dolan’s film was initially planned to connect with the world of M3GAN, but the studio is now looking for a different way to release it.

The 2022 horror film M3GAN was a big success, earning $180 million worldwide and a profit of almost $80 million. However, its sequel, M3GAN 2.0, didn’t do as well, bringing in only $39 million globally. According to Deadline, this lower performance, despite a larger budget, may have led Universal Pictures to rethink the release plans for the film Soulm8te.

A clash in release dates also contributed to the decision. Paramount scheduled its horror movie, Primate, for the same weekend, and it wasn’t feasible for two big studios to compete with each other by releasing horror films at the same time.

Soulm8te is a film about a man who buys an AI android after his wife passes away. He hopes to recreate a loving relationship, but the seemingly harmless robot becomes dangerous. The movie features Claudia Doumit, Lily Sullivan, Isabelle Bonfrer, Emma Ramos, and Sydney Blackburn. The filmmakers have said the story draws inspiration from the erotic thrillers of the 1990s.

Kate Dolan, the director of the 2021 horror film You Are Not My Mother, wrote the screenplay with Rafael Jordan. The original story came from James Wan, Ingrid Bisu, and Jordan. James Wan of Atomic Monster and Jason Blum of Blumhouse are producing the film, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ingrid Bisu serving as executive producers.
