In a recent development, the game publishing company Kasedo Games, known for strategy games like Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus and Ixion, among others, has acquired Megapop’s upcoming city-building game titled “Life Below”. This game is scheduled for release on PC in the year 2026.
Rather than building a lively commercial city or a fortified settlement for post-apocalyptic survivors, Life Below invites players to revive underwater ecosystems and foster thriving coral reefs, similar to the experience in Terra Nil.
To maintain a healthy ecosystem for their reefs, players should create an optimal environment that encourages growth and monitor the biodiversity within their coral communities to increase resilience against human-induced threats. These hazards can present themselves in various forms such as heatwaves, increased acidity levels, pollution, and large-scale jellyfish invasions.
In a state of distress, coral reefs are dying and marine ecosystems are crumbling. The role falls upon you, as the protector Thalassa, to save the Heart of the Reef and resurrect life in the depths below. By harnessing its power and cultivating fresh coral formations, your mission is to revive the underwater world before it’s gone forever. Renowned writer Rhianna Pratchett (Mirror’s Edge, Tomb Raider) has crafted the storyline for this captivating game titled Life Below.
Jørgen Tharaldsen, Megapop’s CEO, expressed excitement about their partnership with Kasedo Games. Given our fondness for IXION, we are well-aware of Kasedo’s knack for fostering unique games. In a press statement, he acknowledged the good fortune and gratitude they feel towards their publishing partner Kasedo, as well as Creative Europe, the Norwegian Film Institute, and Viken Filmcentre, who have provided funding that enables them to bring Life Below to life as originally conceived.
As an enthusiastic player, I’m thrilled to share that Lise Hagen Lie, our esteemed game director, has given us this exciting insight: “We eagerly anticipate everyone enjoying Life Below, a captivating blend of relaxation and strategy. Dive into the game swiftly yet don’t forget to ponder and utilize every element within the reef meticulously, as your ultimate goal – a thriving reef – awaits!
She emphasized that this game is designed to focus on hope, possibilities, and our interconnectedness, rather than despair. In reality, marine life is facing numerous challenges, and understanding and caring about these environmental issues is crucial for their survival. While I aim for players to enjoy the game as a fun strategic challenge, I also wish they leave feeling optimistic about the future of underwater life.
Life Below will take part in Steam Next Fest with a free demo from June 9 to 16, 2025.
