It appears that unofficial reports suggest that the deal between Doctor Who and Disney+ has collapsed, meaning Disney+ will not be funding or producing Season 3.

The long-running TV series “Doctor Who” is experiencing record-low viewership in its 60-year run, with the show consistently failing to appear on Nielsen’s ratings charts. To add to the concern, Disney has been cutting budgets and reducing the number of episodes for their streaming service shows such as Marvel and Star Wars productions on Disney+.

YouTuber Claims Disney Wanted Full Control of Doctor Who Before Dropping Deal

Insider Says Disney Won’t Renew Doctor Who Deal

New information emerges once more, this time from YouTube’s Tachyon Pulse Podcast. They claim, based on reliable production sources, that Disney is not planning to renew the Doctor Who contract, thus signifying their departure from the show.

Based on my repeated conversations with a trusted source who is part of the team, I can confirm that the general sentiment among them is that there will be no further extension to this agreement.

Disney Reportedly Wanted to Fire Davies, Pick New Doctor, and Control the Franchise

The YouTuber mentions that if Season 3 had happened under Disney, they aimed to have complete authority over Doctor Who. He explains that not only did Disney want to choose the new showrunner, due to their dissatisfaction with Davies following his controversial content which reportedly harmed the series, but they also desired to decide who would be the next incarnation of The Doctor.

Disney wasn’t content with merely dismissing Russell T Davies as showrunner and selecting a new Doctor for “Doctor Who.” Instead, they were seeking to have the final say in choosing the next showrunner and the new Doctor themselves, essentially wanting full control over the series.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I’d like to share an interesting detail about a conversation I recently had with someone in the know. It appears Disney+ was eager to gain access to the entire collection of Doctor Who, focusing particularly on the eras starring David Tennant and Matt Smith – the seasons that garner the most attention. However, it seems the rights for these episodes are entangled internationally, making it a complex issue to navigate.

What’s next for Doctor Who?

Again, official confirmation that Doctor Who is done at Disney+ hasn’t been announced.

The YouTube analyst points out that Sony, being the owner of Davies’ Bad Wolf production company, suggests a possibility of Doctor Who continuing on Amazon. Yet, much like Disney, Amazon might demand access to the entire Doctor Who archive, a proposition that the BBC reportedly opposes.

In relation to the latest Season 2 finale where Billie Piper’s character Rose Tyler regenerated into the Doctor, the YouTuber is uncertain if she will truly become the Time Lord and sees it as an “attempt in desperation,” or a “last-ditch effort” from Russell T Davies.

According to Davies’ remarks, it appears that Doctor Who might take a break, potentially for two or more years.
