Ulrich Thomsen Cast as Sinestro in Shocking DCU ‘Lanterns’ Series Reveal!

In the DC Universe’s “Green Lantern” series, actor Ulrich Thomsen has been chosen to portray the character Sinestro, who is commonly known as a formidable supervillain according to industry reports.

Danish thespian Ulrich Thomsen is renowned for an array of works, such as The Blacklist, Counterpart, The Thing, among numerous others.

61-year-old Thomsen is now part of the cast alongside Kyle Chandler (as Green Lantern Hal Jordan) and Aaron Pierre (as Green Lantern John Stewart). Additionally, Kelly Macdonald plays Sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt portrays modern cowboy William Macon, and it appears that Poorna Jagannathan will be joining as Zoe, a possible love interest for John, based on initial casting calls.

Sinestro a surprise?

The unexpected revelation that Sinestro will appear in the series Lanterns is intriguing, considering its focus on Earth. Reports about the plot imply that Jordan and Stewart are probing a murder in the heart of America. It’s possible that Sinestro could be involved, tracking them, or making an early appearance in a cosmic storyline before the duo returns to Earth. Additionally, James Gunn has hinted that the main antagonist of Lanterns may link to the broader DCU. Could Sinestro be the villain?

Back when I was deeply immersed in the world of comics, and particularly the 2011 Green Lantern film where Mark Strong brought Sinestro to life, I remember that Sinestro wasn’t always a foe for the Green Lantern Corps. In fact, he started out as one of their own, serving as Hal Jordan’s mentor and trainer within the ranks. But things took a turn, and he ultimately rose to lead his own group, the Sinestro Corps, armed with fear-powered yellow rings instead of the willpower-fueled green ones wielded by Green Lanterns. So, if Sinestro is indeed a supervillain in the Lantern universe, it’s probably safe to assume he’s already donning that sinister yellow ring and suit.

In case there had been a follow-up film for “Green Lantern”, Sinestro’s character would have taken center stage as he transformed into a Yellow Lantern, hinted by the post-credit scene showing him receiving the yellow ring. Similarly, the aborted Green Lantern series on HBO Max, spearheaded by Seth Grahame-Smith, Greg Berlanti, and Marc Guggenheim, also intended to emphasize Sinestro’s role.

Very grounded series

Chris Mundy is the showrunner with the series written by Damon Lindelof and Tom King.

At the latest NYCC gathering, I shared that Chris, Damon, and Tom have meticulously crafted this endeavor. It’s another remarkable project that’s been graced with good fortune from its inception,” I expressed. “It’s a creation that, during the early stages of our journey within the DC Universe, in the first few weeks of spearheading this project, we gathered with a team of writers, and Tom King was one of those talented individuals.

Gunn went on to say, “We were in this room brainstorming, and the idea for Lanterns emerged, which we then shared with Chris and Damon. It’s flowed quite effortlessly, feeling very authentic, making it a remarkably down-to-earth series – an unusual trait for a Green Lantern production. But trust me, when it airs on HBO, it will be unlike anything anyone has ever seen before. I can hardly wait for people to experience it!
