As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that 2024 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride for Ubisoft – and not in a fun, adrenaline-pumping way! The series of events this year has left me scratching my head more times than I can count.
2022 has been a challenging year for Ubisoft, with some high-profile releases not meeting expectations. The sales of Star Wars Outlaws were so low that Assassin’s Creed Shadows had to be postponed until 2025. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown received positive reviews but lackluster sales. Additionally, there are rumors that the long-awaited shooter XDefiant might be closed down in the near future.
Following disappointments with established franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia, Ubisoft took a surprising step: they launched an NFT-based game titled Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles towards the end of 2024. As expected, this blockchain RPG has turned out to be a disastrous mess. Users have been vocal about issues where one user seems to have manipulated the game so that they are matched against this individual during games, and they consistently win automatically.
Game leaders are consistently seeking the newest popular wave, and likely felt caught off guard during the period when Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) were extremely popular. Given that the video game sector initially specialized in selling customers seemingly worthless digital debris, they might have thought they had been outsmarted.
As a passionate gamer, it seems like almost every gaming company I follow is diving headfirst into NFTs these days. Even iconic series like Mario vs Sonic from the Olympics took a detour to chase the crypto trend. Fortunately, many of these projects fizzled out, much like tulips in a market crash. However, Ubisoft, in the midst of its disastrous year, decided to go all-in on NFTs. If history repeats itself, there’ll likely be a book or two chronicling 2024 as a year to forget for Ubisoft.
According to a statement released by Ubisoft in September, they adjusted their projected earnings for the second quarter from $500 million to approximately $350-$370 million. It’s evident that the release of Grimoria Chronicles won’t be contributing significantly to getting them out of this financial predicament.
