In the 1960s, when Doctor Who first aired, the BBC wasn’t very good at saving the show’s episodes. It’s understandable – they didn’t expect this seemingly simple science fiction series to become so popular and gain fans around the world. As a result, many episodes from the first two Doctors are now missing, with only fragments of sound or still photos remaining. However, in March 2026, a collector discovered a box of old films containing two previously lost Doctor Who episodes.
The BBC reports that recently discovered episodes are from The Daleks’ Master Plan, a 12-part Doctor Who story featuring the First Doctor. Most of the episodes from this series had been lost, but thanks to this collection, the first and third installments – “The Nightmare Begins” and “Devil’s Planet” – have now been recovered.
The charity Film Is Fabulous! recently discovered these episodes within a private collector’s collection. The BBC plans to restore them and make them available on iPlayer in April, which is great news for Doctor Who fans. I’m really excited to see this historical find become accessible, and I hope they uncover more lost episodes in the future.
