Twisters Director Reveals Reason for Excluding Glen Powell’s Kiss Scene from Final Cut

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for both cinema and the unpredictability of nature, I find the making of Twisters, the 2024 sequel to the iconic 1996 Twister movie, absolutely fascinating. Having lived through the original’s release during my formative years, I was eagerly anticipating this new rom-com set against the backdrop of tornadoes and the evolving dynamics of beloved characters.

Following the release of the original Twister film in 1996, another installment titled Twisters made its debut in cinemas on July 17, 2024. This romantic comedy generated excitement among viewers due to its portrayal of tornado dangers. By tapping into nostalgia, the movie explores fresh storylines and character interactions.

In our recent chat, filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung shared insights into why he opted against including the kiss scene between Glen Powell as Tyler Owens and Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Cooper in the movie’s finale. Despite having filmed their romantic moment, the director made an alternative choice for the story’s conclusion. As a devoted fan following this development closely, I was intrigued to learn about Lee Isaac Chung’s decision to deviate from the traditional Hollywood ending of having Tyler and Kate share a kiss after their relationship progressed throughout the film.

Why did Lee Issac Chung discard the kiss scene?

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Isaac Chung explained his decision to omit a planned kiss scene between Tyler Owens and Kate Cooper after Tyler’s airport chase. He shared, “The audience’s perspective on wanting or not wanting a kiss has changed. I attempted to include the kiss, but it sparked strong reactions – not due to the actors’ performance of the kiss itself.”

As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but share my excitement when Lee mentioned an alternative take from their scene. He expressed, “Instead of that kiss we all know, this was the version I shot that day. And let me tell you, it’s got my vote as the superior ending.”

Glen Powell’s take on not including the kiss scene

Glen, the actor known for “The Hit Man,” playfully expressed some irritation when the lengthy kiss scene between him and Chung was removed from the movie. He suggested that his acting skills in this particular scene might have been too strong for Chung, causing her to prefer not working with him and Kate together.

The director, Lee Isaac Chung, shared his reasoning behind having Tyler and Kate run and chase towards the storm in the final scene instead of sharing a kiss. He explained, “A kiss would suggest that Kate’s journey was solely about finding love. But I believe it’s more impactful for her to keep moving forward with a smile.”

Daisy Edgar-Jones, the actress portraying Kate Cooper in the movie, discussed her character’s experience. She revealed that exploring the deep connection and love between two characters, along with the impact of the weather on their relationship, was an exciting and novel aspect for her.

In the original 1996 Twister film by Jan de Bont, Anthony Ramos and David Corenswet played the leading roles. However, in the more recent Twister adaptation, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones take on those roles instead.
