TV’s Reverse-Flash, Tom Cavanagh, Gives His Opinion on Ezra Miller’s ‘Flash’ Movie

Tom Cavanagh, renowned for portraying Reverse-Flash and various incarnations of Harrison Wells on the TV series ‘The Flash’, voiced his thoughts about the ‘The Flash’ movie during Fan Expo Portland. The 2023 film faced challenges upon its release, falling short of expectations despite being a much-anticipated addition to the DCEU timeline.

Regarding the movie, Cavanagh openly stated that he watched it and found himself appreciating it. He also acknowledged the difficulties the film encountered, particularly the off-camera scandals involving Ezra Miller.

Speaking highly of Grant Gustin’s characterization of Barry Allen, Cavanagh acknowledged that the movie made Barry seem “more innocent and unique.” He further explained, “They intentionally decreased his IQ slightly, which was a clever decision because it offered a fresh perspective rather than repeating what we did for a decade.

Apart from lauding Michael Keaton’s comeback as Batman and labeling it a thrilling moment, Cavanagh noted that the prominent role of Batman in the film’s promotional materials suggested something significant. In essence, he hinted that the DVD cover showcasing Batman rather than The Flash might be an indicator of where the studio perceived the main attraction lay.

As a passionate cinephile, I can relate to the hurdles faced when creating a CGI-intensive finale for a superhero flick, just like Cavanagh did. The first half of this movie, though, was simply brilliant – particularly its innovative portrayal of Barry’s origin tale, which set it apart from other films in the genre.

Additionally, he remembered a previous chat with Geoff Johns from DC, regarding rivalry with Marvel. During this chat, Johns expressed, ‘Whatever benefits comic books overall, benefits us all.’

Despite experiencing some highs and lows, Cavanagh admired that the movie version of The Flash distinguished itself from the television show, offering a unique perspective that added new dimensions to the character.

Nevertheless, this movie serves as a divisive point in the DC Extended Universe, attracting both positive and negative feedback from fans, critics, and people involved within the series itself.

This film has sparked a wide range of opinions in the DC Extended Universe, with both supporters and detractors among fans, reviewers, and those working behind the scenes.
